Frito Lay Canada pulls pistachios tied to U.S. recall

Does that mean that there is a job somewhere for someone to go through all those can of MIXED NUTS and dig out the pistachios?   :popcorn

I wonder what Galen Weston's very good friend Prince Charles, noted organic farmer, thinks of the way Loblaws/PC obtain and distribute their meat products.  :annoyed:

Maple Leaf recalls wieners over listeria fears
Quote
Nine wiener products have been recalled by Maple Leaf Foods Inc. because of concerns the meat may contain traces of listeria monocytogenes.

There have been no reported illnesses connected to the wiener products and the recall is only a precaution, Maple Leaf said Tuesday in a release.

"Maple Leaf is doing more aggressive and frequent Listeria testing at our plants than regulations require, and that means we're finding it more," the company said.

News Release
Illegal GM Flax Contaminates Canadian Exports

Quote
"This is an absolute nightmare for flax growers and why we worked so hard
to have the GM flax removed," said Terry Boehm, a flax grower and Vice
President of the National Farmers Union. "Flax growers forced the GM flax off
the market eight years ago to prevent any threat of contamination and protect
our export markets. GM flax was never wanted or needed. We knew it would
destroy our European markets and now we fear this has happened."
At the beginning of this month, cash bids for flaxseed in Western Canada
fell dramatically based on rumours of GM contamination.
"This contamination is extremely shocking as GM flax has not been grown
in Canada since 2001," said Lucy Sharratt, Coordinator of the Canadian
Biotechnology Action Network. "Where did this contamination come from?"
                                         -snip-
This revelation of GM flax contamination comes right in the middle of
another huge scandal over Canada's approval of Monsanto's eight-trait GE
'SmartStax' corn without any health safety assessment.
"Consumers are reeling from learning that Health Canada did not approve
the new 'SmartStax' GM corn and now they find out that their flax could be
contaminated," said Sharratt. "GM is out of control, we clearly need a
moratorium on all new GM crops and foods until we can examine the entire
system that regulates GM in Canada."
"Democracy is not the law of the majority, it's the protection of the minority." -Albert Camus 1913-1960

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Heinz Canada are warning the public that Heinz Mixed Cereal for babies should not be consumed.

They say the product — Heinz Mixed Cereal, a Baby Cereal, Stage 2, From 6 Months, in the 227 gram package — may contain elevated levels of Ochratoxin A and is being recalled.

Ochratoxin A is a mycotoxin produced by some fungi that can grow in certain food crops such as grains, grapes and coffee beans, and is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a possible human carcinogen.

The affected product has best-before date codes of BB/MA 10 DE 26 and BB/MA 10 DE 29.

The product has been distributed nationally, but there have been no reported illnesses.

The CFIA says the cereal shouldn't be eaten — but if it has, there is no need for other actions, since even the highest levels of Ochratoxin A found in these products are not high enough to pose a health risk when consumed as part of a normal diet over the short term.

Brace for massive food recall: officials
Quote
Canadian consumers can likely expect an avalanche of food recalls after an ingredient used in thousands of processed foods was found to be contaminated with salmonella, government investigators said Friday.

The popular flavour enhancer hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) is added to a wide range of processed foods, including dips, salad dressings, chips, sauces, hotdogs, soups and frozen dinners.

Already, 56 products in the United States and two in Canada -- Hawaiian Kettle Style Sweet Maui Onion potato chips and T. Marzetti brand veggie dips -- have been recalled this week after salmonella was detected in the flavouring ingredient produced by a Nevada company.
