Cdn. military seek Muslim recruits

The Canadian Forces want more Muslims among their ranks.

There are few Muslims in the Canadian military and that is something that Rear Admiral Tyrone Pile, who is in charge of recruiting, wants to change.

 Pile would like more Muslims in the forces if only to better understand the sensibilities of the people they encounter on their missions.

He noted that Canada has been involved with Muslim countries for nearly 60 years through its peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Kashmir, Kosovo, Lebanon, Syria and the Gaza Strip.

Pile also wants to establish a program of Islamic studies for the military, possibly through the Canadian Defence Academy and the Royal Military College in Kingston, educational facilities that come under his command.

More delicate is the question of fighting people of their own religion and culture. But Siddiqi said that is an issue for many other people who join the military, including Christians.

Ha! Good luck, I say! They'll need it.

How about we encourage more Muslims to run for seats in the government so they can teach us a thing or two about their religion, culture and people? Oh no, that would be taking it too far. That would be plain silly, not to mention dangerous!  :roll:

UNIVERSITY MILITARY TRAINING?

The Conference of Defence Associations (CDA) recently commended the Senate standing committee on national security and defence for its interim report on the future role of Canada's Primary Reserve. It recommended the Department of National Defence/Canadian Forces consider re-establishing a military presence on the campuses of educational institutions.

The article says the timing is right, really? because now U.S./Canada have a

military agreement that will set down each country's roles and responsibilities should North America be attacked is in the final stages of negotiation, Defence Minister Peter MacKay revealed Tuesday night. -snip-

"This agreement provides a framework for the combined defence of Canada and the U.S. during peace, contingencies, and war," MacKay told the Permanent Joint Board on Defence, comprising senior military officers, government officials and diplomats from both nations.

"The plan describes the authorities and means by which the two governments would approve homeland military operations in the event of a mutually agreed threat, and how our two militaries would collaborate and share information."

The executive director of the DND-funded Conference of Defence Associations, Alain "we have to write a number of op-eds to the press" Pellerin , says he believes the time is right to reinstate the Canadian Officers Training Corps program at universities :

"I think the military is very popular in the public eye," Pellerin said. "I think the universities wouldn't want to be out of step and say we don't want the COTC program."

You know - the one we haven't had since 1968.

Remember how the media jumped on Paul Martin's jugular when he suggested that Harper would have our military running on our streets? Not such a far fetched notion it would seem. Grrrrrr.
