She'd get fired at the Star because, from what I recall, this is not the first time.

Oh, look, about a Dowd column...  http://www.j-source.ca/english_new/detail.php?id=4181
ETA: the comments also talk about the de Soto column.

There's an old site criticizing Wente, but a quick search didn't turn up plagiarism:

There is a new site around somewhere with a series of examples of Wente's, ah, borrowing -- I just loo0ked at it last week, but don't remember now where. Anyway, seems to be a well-known problem.

So George Monbiot wrote to the Mope & Wail about Wente's distortion of his views, and the Goad & Flail edited his letter  :mad2 :

Are we trapped in an ever-decreasing circle of incestuous amplification?  :o

Or just getting real good at spreading the word?  :p

A stupid screed by Wente about Strauss-Kahn - no new insights but conflation of the US and Canadian justice systems - what the hell is a "North American" justice system?

As for civil law, Québec's system is closer to that of France than those of either the RoC or the US (except Louisiana, to some extent).

"Pictures of the great man in cuffs are indicative of “a brutality, a violence, of an incredible cruelty,” declared Elisabeth Guigou, a former French justice minister. “I’m happy that we don’t have the same judiciary system.”

Me too. The American system is infinitely more fair"

"The bizarre reaction of the European socialist class suggests that they too are out of touch. On the whole, I prefer North America, where we expect the values of our rulers to more or less reflect our own. And when they don’t, we’re appalled.."

SOCIALIST? This has utterly nothing to do with socialism, unless old Silvio is also a hidden socialist...

I suspect this lazy so-called journo doesn't even read French, or doesn't bother to do so, or she'd know that reactions in France to this story are far from unanimous, even within the Socialist Party ranks and certainly among feminists. They are only there to confirm her own ethnocentric cultural stereotypes. I suspect cover-ups of the rich and powerful pretty much cross cultural and national lines - they are also a key component of patriarchal rule.

More Wenteism

Quote
Her column in today’s Globe not only borrows quotes, but in one case, appears to reproduce a whole paragraph - including another journalist’s introduction and connecting sentence.

Still more Wentism! http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/margaret-wente/marrying-up-and-cheating-down/article2030301/

And this sterling quote (bit classist, racist and sexist, non?)

"Why would a man who’s married to a thoroughbred like Maria Shriver cheat on her with a plump Mexican housekeeper?"  ::)
