Some scientists believe 'tipping points' have been reached in the Arctic. 3-5 years before Abrupt Change.

Carlos Duarte, CSIC researcher and author of the article, states: "We are facing the first clear evidence of a dangerous climate change. However, some of the researchers and some of the Media are plunged into a semantic debate about whether the Arctic Sea-Ice has reached a tipping point or not. This all is distracting the attention on the need to develop indicators that warn about the proximity of abrupt changes in the future, as well as on the policymaking to prevent them".

We're in trouble. I suspect we're going to see multi-thousands of deaths over the coming years, sooner than we think. The IPCC said back in '09 extreme weather is def. connected to climate change, it's not going away, but I have no idea what kind of preparations have been made in Canada/U.S. or anywhere else for that matter. Maybe multi-thousands is a very low ball guess.

About Denialgate or Deniergate; leaked documents showing the US Heartland Institute funds AGW deniers. Some of this was known and some suspected.  Desmogblog broke the story about the documents.  Heartland says one document was faked, but this is still up in the air.

http://www.desmogblog.com/heartland-institute-exposed-internal-documents-unmask-heart-climate-denial-machine

Independently, John Mashey has been researching Heartland finances and Desmogblog has his detailed report, and he has been posting more details at Deep Climate and elsewhere.

Here is a roundup of blog links about it:  http://climatecrocks.com/2012/02/16/denialgate-get-it-all-here/

But also there is BCL about some Canadian connections:

French researchers have climate models predicting a rise in temperature of 2 degrees at least and at worst 3.5 to 5 degrees, by 2100.

ETA: I asked  another blogger about this and it is not really news more confirmation of what the scientists know already.

Heartland associate taught at "biased" climate course at Carleton U:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/feb/28/heartland-associate-climate-scepticism-ottawa-university

"An associate of the Heartland Institute, the thinktank devoted to discrediting climate change, taught a course at a top Canadian university that contained more than 140 false, biased and misleading claims about climate science, an expert audit has found.
The course at Ottawa's Carleton University, which is being accused of bias, was taught for four terms from 2009-2011 by Tom Harris, a featured expert at the Heartland Institute.
Heartland's core mission is to discredit climate change, and it is currently moving into the education realm. It plans to spend $100,000 on a project countering established teaching of climate change to American school children, an unauthorised release of documents showed.
But the audit report, released on Tuesday, suggests such efforts are already underway on college campuses".

Why isn't this in our news? The infuriating part is that Harris is a very competent instructor and the students like his delivery. Check out their comments in the study.

The Heartland Institute has
received large donations from the energy industry (including at least  $676,500 from
ExxonMobil from 1998-2006) no surprise there.

Heartland is in the news; two things happened: several of Heartland's internal documents about their funders and plans were sent anonymously to some climate change bloggers who publicized them to the discredit of Heartland; then a prominent scientist, Peter Gleick, who argued against the deniers a lot admitted that he acquired them by deceiving someone at Heartland into thinking he was a board member and emailing them to him. So lots of hoo-ha there, including over Heartland's plans to produce a climate curriculum for schools K-12 which would basically leave the kids ignorant and confused.

At the same time probably coincidentally, John Mashey, who is a careful and thorough researcher, was finding out about Heartland's finances by researching public documents - tax forms etc., and he published his report at Desmogblog. Heartland is a registered charity, but appears to have spent money on political lobbying, so it could get into trouble with the tax people (remember Al Capone?). Also one or more people working for the US government who also have been getting paid by Heartland to do stuff may be in trouble. Mashey finds that the bootleg Heartland documents tend to confirm the stuff he has found out.

Lots of  blogs are screeching and hollering over various silly aspects, but to a large extent Heartland is like a big dishonest cockroach caught in the light, and the more exposure it gets the better.

Anyway, the main stories about this are at Deep Climate and Desmogblog, including:

http://deepclimate.org/2012/02/14/heartland-budget-and-strategy-documents-revealed/

http://deepclimate.org/2012/02/20/heartlands-anonymous-donor/

John Mashey:

http://www.desmogblog.com/fake-science-fakexperts-funny-finances-free-tax

http://www.desmogblog.com/fakeducation-years-heartland

And many other posts at Desmogblog in the past 8 days or so. Many other blogs are on it too.

And another article about Harris teaching at Carleton:

It's also not all bad news; Michael Mann, who has been reviled and smeared by the deniers for years, has a new book out about his experiences, and he is doing lots of interviews and is getting a lot of support from people. He also tweets and is pretty good at publicizing his book by tweet:

Tom Harris is teaching science at Carleton?  :o
Was David Blaine not available?

Hey Holly, remember this? It's Harris at FD advising how to create chaos in the scientific community to benefit the Cons.

Apparently Harris's course has been rotated out and maybe Carleton will avoid letting him teach it again.

What people do on an individual level is (of course) mirrored in what politicians do on a global level. And so la-dee-dah we have nothing.

In a shock move, officially-accredited non-government delegates who had traveled thousands of miles to attend the UN's Rio+20 sustainable development conference in Brazil have been refused all access to the central negotiating text.
This key document, containing all of the environmental conference's decisions, is now restricted to governmental delegates only.  -snip-
The official added that the UN has become acutely sensitive to criticism, particularly because of a number of financial and sexual scandals at the UN's plush headquarters in New York, many of which had not been exposed in the mainstream news media. The official thought it quite likely that the Rio negotiating text had been classified because the Durban text, once CFACT had released it, had proven to be such a grave embarrassment to the UN and to the participating governments, most of whose negotiators did not actually read the long, diffuse texts before agreeing to them.http://climatedepot.com/a/16354/UN-Censorship-Rio-Earth-Summit-text-is-now-secret--Senior-official-of-transparent-UN-admits-Rio-negotiating-text-is-classified
