Re Prometheus.

So, without spoiling too much (I hope), here's the biggest plot hole in Prometheus.  It's right at the very beginning.  Once they arrived, why didn't they first explore the terrain remotely?  They clearly had the technology.  The valley-coming-up-after-the-mountains bit was beautiful but pretty much destroyed any plausibility.  They could and should have mapped the whole thing out from orbit.  Yes, you want to see it yourself.  But it turned into a Star-Trekkian "away team".

The second (biggest) plot hole was when they decided to go have a chat with Special Magic Unicorn.  If you are going to meet Special Magic Unicorn, you had better bring a pretty big Special Magic Unicorn net.  Special Magic Unicorns are always unpredictable creatures, you know, and this one would obviously know much better how to work the technology.

But, if you're worried about all that, you're watching the wrong genre.  This is not an Alien movie, even if it is billed as one.  Think Lovecraftian "Dead and dreaming".  The *most* important point was the reaction of Special Magic Unicorn.  I'm torn on whether I would have liked to have heard what David said, and while I would have liked a longer conversation, what better sequel bait to leave?

It's a tiny greenhouse, so therefore not too much of a problem for me. I should have over 200 carrots and about 50 cucumbers if all goes well.

My main veggie garden - it's huge - went kaput last year because of weeds. Tomorrow I'm going to try to clear a small portion of it, and plant radishes, lettuce, and beets (not all will grow, though). About 50 of each. But, first, I have a hell of a lot of weeds to pull - and that's the tough part for me.

Our garden is going gangbusters right now - we finally killed all but one of last year's kale plants, but another round are getting big and tasty.  Potatoes are looking impressive, peas are getting big as well.

That said, I am not the gardener in the household (apparently I am the handyperson).  So while R's garden is very happy, I am not happy with fixing the bricklefritzen leak under the sink instead of refinishing the deck like I had planned (not to mention building some stairs, building a bookshelf etc. etc).

Outside of home life I am suddenly involved in 2 different start-up businesses, 3 if you count my own.  That makes a funny fit for this crusty socialist, but I am sick to the nadgers of working for others.  All good causes/goals, but I want to make a good living at it too, so we'll see.  Still working the 'day' job also, where I deal with extreme violent behaviours in exchange for micro-pay and good coworkers.
Things are changing for the good, but I am feeling a mite impatient at the rate - perhaps because 40 is coming in about 8 weeks?  Truth be told things weren't so bad before, aside from the micro-pay issue.  Kids are healthy and amazing, R is the same.  I lost 25 lbs over the last year, my parents moved out to the Coast so I see them weekly instead of yearly.
The pleasures of the table are for every man, of every land, and no matter what place in history or society; they can be a part of all his other pleasures, and they last the longest, to console him when he has outlived the rest.

Wish I was turning 40 again. All sounds pretty good for you and yours, arborman.

I'd love to be 40 again, but in a different vocation.  8)

My parsley and basil look pretty forlorn right now, as I just used most of it all for homemade Italian sausage sgetti sauce from scratch. I've also made a spinach quiche and tomorrow morning will start on making 50 or so oatmeal cookies with raisins and almonds. Now I'm going for a swim, pool opened yesterday.

Did a marathon 5-day run of reviewing about 2000 pages of technical background information. And it's a hot and humid day - something I don't miss from living in Ottawa.

I'm completely waterlogged, lottsa swimming, goofing around with the kid. Almost ate a terrible hamburger at the park festivities, had something called a zero coke (yuk. threw it all away), came home made good sammiches and iced tea, went back. Now it's time for a cold beer! Gorgeous day, no humidity, no smog even. Amazing.

I watched the Euro Cup final at a café-bar that was neutral territory - the owners and most of the staff are from southern France, and it is home to Marseille supporters. Then cycled back homeward - lots of Spain supporters (mostly Latin Americans; there isn't a large Spanish community here) and they came up to Little Italy where I live (where there is also a large Latin American component, as well as myriad other origins) to tease the mourning Italians and Italophiles. 4-0 is a huge scoring difference in football (soccer). It didn't really reflect the prowess of the teams: Spain was stronger and deserved to win, but the Italian side was also very strong and somehow just didn't get lucky breaks (chances).

People are still milling about here, but of course it is subdued.

The weather is beautiful here too - I love heat, and it is hot, but it is breezy and not muggy at all. My old cat is happy.

I started my tax returns tonight - I'm always late, but it don't matter because I don't have taxable income. Also worked on the garden quite a bit - it looks terrific, and if we get a week or two of warm sunny weather, the lilies are going to be awesome.

Also started building a popsicle stick house that I'm hoping will be my craft item at the 50+ club here - it's a bit more difficult than I expected, especially trying to get the walls square. But it's something I can do - everyone else at the club is doing knitting or needlepoint or making quilts.

What a comfort to hear that; I'm also late doing my taxes, though I won't have any taxes to pay or to get back for this year. (I had taxable income, but not very much.)

I don't think anything in the world causes me as much stress as doing the taxes, which is silly, because on disability I don't earn enough from my disability pension to be taxed, and it's been that way for ten years now.

Question: why aren't senior citizens exempt from filing tax returns if they're no longer working?  :confused

Well, wealthier ones might have other income from investments or properties, and many people who are pensioners do work from time to time.

But it is annoying if you are only earning your pension + OAP.
