Kewl! 8)

Over at What hurts?, we'll get you cycle-ready and your bicycle arthritis/osteo friendly...

This would be a great blog idea for a geek ... Cycling with various disabilities, though I'd prefer a more positive title (and not the cringeworthy euphemistic "differently-abled"). www.copenhagenize.com has several posts on this.

Lots and lots of bicycles at the demos in support of the students here. Demonstrators ... but also cops. Les flics were really on their PR best behaviour at the demo last Saturday.

Les fleurs de Mme Lau - Mme Lau is a florist, rue Bernard in Mile-End just a bit south and west from where I live - I think we see her in the background. And a trusty old bicycle in the foreground, similar to mine. Cyclist in spring coat: http://montrealcyclechic.com/post/21255594403/les-fleurs-de-mme-lau

This is cute - an artist in the Dutch city of Utrecht installed small "Barbie" type dolls (not real Barbies, which are far more expensive, but cheapo "fashion" dolls from a Euro shop above traffic signals at busy junctions, to remind cyclists to do their hand signals: http://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2012/04/16/barbie-as-a-role-model/

Remember, all Dutch schoolchildren learn such cycling rules in primary school.

Launching Copenhagen's Bicycle Superhighways - we can dream a bit (yes, it snows there).

Wow. An intrepid young woman - student striker? - pausing on a cycle-share Bixi which has been modified in support of the social movement. The sign on her front basket states "Gratuité scolaire" (free education), and not only she but her steed is wearing a red felt square. (Carré rouge).

www.bixipoesie.ca  "Poetic vandalism" - oh, just stickers, easily removed, in the colours of the publicity of the original sponsors.

In the Gazette: http://blogs.montrealgazette.com/2012/04/30/bixi-poesie-no-poetry-will-not-be-replacing-advertising-on-montreal-bixi-bikes/

I saw a whole fleet of the poeticized bicycles on avenue Mont-Royal. Thrilling!

airbag for cyclists

Quote
It is the perfect invention for those of us too vain to bother wearing a helmet while riding our bikes.
The 'Hvvding' helmet is an airbag 'collar' that springs into action within 0.1 seconds, covering the skull and neck of a rider in the event of an impact.

Roughly translated into English as the 'Chieftain' - the Hvvding was designed over six years by two Swedish industrial design students.

Well, some of us would say vanity is a red herring (and an insult); that this whole issue is a typical Daily-Mailesque distraction from what is required in terms of infrastructure, law and education to achieve cycling safety. But this is a never-ending argument on all cycling forums (at least in English-speaking areas - it isn't much of an issue in most other places).

A simply adorable ad for cycling/pedestrian infrastructure, from Norway:

Of course this is a work of bicycle art/craft above all, but there are several ongoing experiments with natural, organic materials to build bicycles, or at least their frames. In particular with bamboo. There are successful high-end bamboo bicycles, but also examples made for the Escolas de bicicletas in Brazil:

A bit of (work-safe) bicycle pron: http://montreal.fr.craigslist.ca/bik/3341541004.html A Batavus Breukelen, beautiful Dutch urban bicycle (yes, Breukelen is the spelling of the Dutch namesake of that NYC borough). And right next to me! But no, I'm not about to spring for her.
