Study turns back clock on origins of life on Earth
« on: May 24, 2009, 05:11:22 AM »
Quote
Many scientists had thought the violent pelting by massive asteroids during the period known as the Late Heavy Bombardment would have melted the Earth's crust and vaporized any life on the planet.

But new three-dimensional computer models developed by a team at the University of Colorado at Boulder shows much of Earth's crust, and the microbes living on it, could have survived and may even have thrived.

"These new results push back the possible beginnings of life on Earth to well before the bombardment period 3.9 billion years ago," said Oleg Abramov, a researcher at the university whose study appears in the journal Nature.

"It opens up the possibility that life emerged as far back as 4.4 billion years ago, about the time the first oceans are thought to have formed," Abramov said in a statement.

Makes me wonder what the anti-evolutionists are thinking about this...

Anti-evolutionists are capable of thinking?

Oh transplant ... you misjudge deniers of evolution altogether - they do indeed have active little minds .....
Here is a website where for all to see the demise any theory of evolution (including those before Darwin) is regularly predicted. It takes a creative mind and a steadfast vision to be able to do that.   :rotfl:

(Sorry, my embedding function seems to have taken the sunny day off.  :D )

edit: Here is another link that may work.

In recent reading of Dembski and other ID proponents I saw them make a claim which has been made for over 40 years. This claim is one that the young-earthers have been making. The claim is that evolution (or major supporting concepts for it) is increasingly being abandoned by scientists, or is about to fall. This claim has many forms and has been made for over 162 years.

They are thinking what they always think - that their jeebus will protect them from nasty facts and knowledge.  And that, somehow, actively fighting facts and knowledge is a way to show how faithful they are.  So the stronger the evidence, the more blatant the proof, the more unavoidably obvious something is - the better of a believer an anti-evolutionist is to deny it.

What it makes me think, however, is that if life was existing and evolving in harsh conditions like that, then what does it mean for all those other trillions of planets out there?
The pleasures of the table are for every man, of every land, and no matter what place in history or society; they can be a part of all his other pleasures, and they last the longest, to console him when he has outlived the rest.

crogh now knows how many days ago he was born.  :D  *

There is a new website, developed by a company called WolframResearch Based in Britain, the company is usually involved in scientific computations, but this is for public use. Called WolframAlphia it can supply esoteric answers to complicated scientific equations, or factoids about more mundane subject

crogh learned about it from PhysicsWorld - here.

* for those thursting to know, crogh was born:
62 years 9 months, 1 day ago
3274 weeks and 2 days ago
22920 days ago
and beyond his birth there were no known major occurrences (Wasn't that enough?)  :applause:

Oh it's an iPhone app.

Honest, the things people think of.

If only they could all apply this genius to curing cancer or AIDS for Alzheimers.
It is when we all play safe that we create a world of utmost insecurity. It is when we all play safe that fatality will lead us to our doom. It is in the "dark shade of courage" alone that the spell can be broken.

So that is where it came from.  :o   I got it in an email from a Lady I know in Toronto - she often sends me deep and meaningful things about 'friends' that are supposed to be forwarded on.

I had to ask her to stop threatening me, as many of them said things would fall off my body if I did not send them on to 5 'friends' with 10 minutes.
