Never really listened to Whitney Houston - too much of a 'pop star' for me, and definitely not funky enough. I rarely listen to pop - my tastes run to hard rock, blues, soul, folk, and reggae.

Extremely sad news. It seemed like she was all set to participate in a tribute to Etta James at the Grammy Awards. For once in a long time, the news about her was positive and then this/  :crying

Such sad news. Like Boom Boom, I didn't care for her singing or her material, but that has no bearing on the tragedy of her early (and it seems, "avoidable" death).

Avoidable is psychobabble shorthand for suicides or parasuicides (binges on substances, deliberately dangerous driving etc).

Yeah, I agree with lagatta's post - I regret her death but just never got into her music. I loved her singing in that movie with Kevin Costner, though. Jazz is another genre, like pop, that I didn't care much for, although it's genuinely sophisicated music.

ETA: almost all the music I listen to is from the 1960s and 1970s. I seem to be stuck in a time warp with regard to music.

Yeah, the grammy's, not so real yet.

Saw on CNN last night there will be some changes made to allow for a tribute to Whitney Houston.

Anthony Shadid, New York Times reporter, dies in Syria
Quote
The New York Times correspondent Anthony Shadid, who won the Pulitzer prize for his coverage of Iraq and was detained in Libya for almost a week last year, has died in eastern Syria while on a reporting assignment.

The cause of his death apparently was an asthma attack, his newspaper said, adding that New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks was with him and carried his body to Turkey.
He was 43.

Waaah! I was a huge fan as a youngster! Goddam he looked so healthy. It's bizarre, I see hugely obese men who's tickers don't look like they could even muster the energy to have a cardiac arrest.

Can someone explain to me how a 43 year old dies 'unexpectedly of natural causes'? 4 kids, that's sad.
