Linking to you Ladies
« on: August 18, 2008, 03:37:24 PM »
Hey,

The Star  :age: has made it a strict no-no for me to link to any blog postings (or anything for that matter) containing profanity, especially fuck, shit, cunt, twat, asshole, dick. You get the picture.

This is extremely frustrating because we -- moi included -- tend to cuss a lot, and for good reason. That means that, despite many excellent posts from JJ and CC and co., I cannot point the way.

I am not requesting you change your style. I sure wouldn't. I just want you to know that, if you feel I should have linked to you and did not, there's a reason.

I was once on a hockey messageboard where the auto-obscenity filter rendered the name of the current Blue Jackets coach as "Ken Hitch****"

The one instance where I've seen this actually done by some respectable Merkin bloggers is in the case of AIPAC, which some now type A*P*C. In those cases, I think they're hoping to duck teh Google -- they don't want to become targets of a campaign. And there may be a few other trigger words that people try to avoid.

Doesn't taking out cuss-words kind of kill the political internets?

In the same vein, there's a town in the UK called Scunthorpe -- look it up on any reputable map -- but the early net-nanny software blocked access to any page containing the name. Or so goes the story.

The more things change, and all that... Do you recall the late unlamented (and as it turned out, robotic) Serdar Argic, Mandos?

Gee. 1994. That was the year I learned how to turn a computer on.

Really?

Techno-phobe though I am, I was certainly using a computer in the 1980s, both at work (trade-union communications department) and returning to university for graduate studies.

I could turn it on, type documents and save them.

Not moi. I was working on hard copy well past 2000.

I went more or less inactive in 2002, when trade and scholarly publishers were just starting to encourage editors to work in Word onscreen. The changeover happened fairly quickly, but it depended on having a trustworthy version of Word that could also do what our designers used to do. Depressing, but true. All that happened when I was out of action.

Except in the last few years, my computer has always been for me. No employer helped me to get one; no employer trained me. And few employers have benefited from what I can do now, although if I live long enough, some one of them might.

I've had a computer since 1987.  You'd have been pinching my cheeks and calling me cute...while I learned DOS and C programming. :)
