The correspondence between DFAIT and Syria re Abdelrazik a year ago show that Syria was at the very least invested in clearing up its international image as a place western countries sent its citizens to be, uh, interrogated.

The Syrians, for good reason, had become very scared of what BushCo might be planning for them, so I'm sure they've been doing PR like crazy with everyone (although not enough to co-operate with Justice O'Connor, eh?). Still, they have huge numbers of their own people in those hell-hole prisons, and Fisk shouldn't be pretending that a change of mind about proxy torture of Westerners is going to change much for the Syrians.
