Kick Ass Blogger Award

I got word that Challenging the Commonplace has received a Kick Ass Blog Award nomination. Thanks to the person who chose us!

Must confess, however, that I don't understand what's it about or its purpose. Clearly, the intention of the originator of the award, mammadawg, is for the thing to go viral. But doesn't that then end up making the "award" meaningless?

And what's the point of going back to MD's site to sign "Mr Linky"? This whole thing comes across to me as a single site's campaign to increase revenue for a pay-per-click advertising scheme.

Maybe I'm missing something - not hard, given my relative neophyte blogger status. Does anyone here know who MD is?

BCS, I don't think that anyone who has been nominated is obliged to pass it on.  In some ways, the process does ressemble a chain-letter, but then, it's also a way to promote your blog outside the circle of those who know and read you, if you wish to do so.

I don't understand what's it about or its purpose.

Keep blogging for a while and you'll get used to these. They've become a kind of blogger's ritual though they're not often in the form of an award. Sometimes it's as simple as: post 6 random things about yourself and then pass it on to three other bloggers.

Memes like these tend to come in herds and since this is the first I've seen in a while I'm betting there'll be a couple or three more along any minute. At this point I think it's generally acknowledged that not everyone will play every time. I often ignore them but I was having a slow day yesterday so I joined in.

Sparqui, I appreciate it, truly! The more people who visit CC, the happier Daphne and I will be.

But the security-conscious part of me wonders who MD is and the purpose behind the KABA. E.g., what's to prevent the KABA from spreading to the non-progressive community of bloggers, which I suspect it already has? This thing looks, from my admittedly jaundiced view, to be

• an income-generating scheme, and/or [/*:m:26cd4urj]
  
• a campaign to increase the hit counts of everyone in the blogosphere (not necessarily a bad thing), and/or [/*:m:26cd4urj]
  
• a scheme to mine contact info of the participants.[/*:m:26cd4urj]

I honestly wanted to highlight blogs that I consider important reads (hence a wee introduction to what they were about). And I know that I appreciate dBO nominating me since now that I'm actually writing something, I appreciate the traffic that it might generate.
