Whalin' on Palin
« on: January 30, 2009, 04:11:36 PM »
Not content with gunning down wolves from planes, now the governor of Alaska wants to destroy 300 Belugas.

More info at Huffington:
Quote
NOAA scientists estimate there are only 375 Cook Inlet belugas left, almost half the 1994 population estimate. The whales have been protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act since 2000, but that alone was not enough to help the species recover from dwindling numbers. A 2005 government estimate put the number at an all-time low of 278 Cook Inlet belugas, prompting federal officials to list the species as endangered last Fall.

The Palin administration argues that the belugas show signs of recovering and that additional regulation is unnecessary.

A while ago, I read Palin's editorial from January 2008 in the New York Times on polar bears.

Even though she has, amazingly, written grammatically correct sentences, I have no idea what she is actually saying.
And I have no idea if what she says in this paragraph is true:

Quote
As a result of these efforts, polar bears are more numerous now than they were 40 years ago. The polar bear population in the southern Beaufort Sea off Alaska’s North Slope has been relatively stable for 20 years, according to a federal analysis.

But I don't trust anything she says until I check out other sources. First part is figuring out what she's actually saying...

More on Sarah Palin's war against wildlife:

From the mudflats, which is a great source of Palin info.

Slightly off-topic, but great fun:

That's wonderful. The first photo of Brian *hearting* the window washing made me burst out laughing, as he appears to be doing.   :D

I love the one where he's doing yoga: the downward moose.

But as I'd apparently like to change the title of this thread to "Whalin' on Palin", I thought I'd add this little reference regarding her new political mentor (Fred Malek, Nixon's hatchet man):

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/geoffrey- ... 63385.html

Warning: it goes sad and gruesome at the end. But very indicative, to me, of the disregard and spite that Palin has for animals.

brebis noire, send a PM with your request to Antonia, who started the thread with her OP.  She's very approachable.

I didn't even have to ask.

(Since I know what's at the end of that article I posted, I know that Antonia is not whalin' on me for wanting to change the title. What is it with Republicans and their hate for animals? I'm also remembering Mitch Romney and his poor pet dog travelling on the roof...Now I'm concerned about all the stuff I don't know.)

I was just showing ya how unapproachable I am.

As for Republicans and animals, the only good dog is a huntin' and gun dog. As for the rest of God's creatures, man has dominion over them. Haven't you heard?

I was also giving you a wide berth.

Animals have been the victims of capitalist patriarchal monotheism ever since Abraham killed that ram instead of his son.

Ha! Or maybe even before that when the snake took the fall for making Adam look like an idiot.

The redeemed snakes were given feet and a shell. They are called turtles, and everybody loves turtles.
