Bombing the Moon(teh stoopid)
« on: June 24, 2009, 01:12:51 AM »
NASA's mission to bomb the Moon

I can't believe they're going to do it. Water? for future settlement? Bullshit. Why the hell would we want to colonize the moon when Mars is a better choice, isn't it? The Moon is an integral part of earth, connected, the ebb and tides of earth's oceans for gawd sakes. This is insane and where the hell is the money coming from, the man in the moon? Insanity.

The dual mission was due to blast off today but was delayed to make way for the shuttle Endeavour. However, another hydrogen leak means that the shuttle launch has now been delayed until next month.
Good.

*I know I've posted this before but I swear I can't find it.

eta - Did you ever wonder how come they can go to Mars, have rovers, mine it and we can't land anything on our own moon surface?

My daughter told me about this this morning.  I said she must have been dreaming.  I'm going to apologize as soon as I get home.

I can't begin to say how upsetting I find this. Technical know-how and scientific intelligence in the service of hubris and folly?

It feels like something out of a science fiction novel.

It does. 2 moons anyone? But some headlines are ridic as in blowing up, not really, they are going to send a satellite and some kind of device that will make an impact and send "particles and debris" which will be picked up by another device that will also crash on the Moon. It leaves tomorrow with 3 times slots in the 5 pmish and I guess will arrive in October sometime. No doubt NASA (whoever the f they really are) will have some sort of civilian driven MoonWatch by the naked eye or something with CNN's all-seeing cameras everywhere.

I watched the film but saw no dust coming up from the first impact.  Apparently various things have crashed on the moon:
Quote
...Such violent impacts are par for the course—the moon is already littered with more than two dozen NASA landers, orbiters, and rovers launched since the 1960s.

But as the new international space race heats up, there's a growing movement to balance scientific ambition with its possible consequences for the moon...

Meanwhile it is clear from what we were allowed to see, that somehow impact was not made. The follow up camera clearly showed either the satellite disintegrated before impact or the detonation failed.  :applause:

You Tube galore of this spectacular weirdness

How come the infra-red showed so much yellow/green/red, which would be warm spots, when it is the dark side? No straight answers at all as of yet.

As I understand it the purpose of all this was to throw up a debris cloud that could then be checked for water's presence on the moon.

NASA's effort was preceded by India a couple of weeks ago when India reported its' space endeavours had indeed, found evidence of water on the moon..
