Returning to using "rape" as a legal term
« on: May 13, 2010, 01:22:37 PM »
Apparently Vic Toews has floated the idea of returning to the use of "rape" as a legal term. The Current had three people discussing the notion today:

James Morton thinks some change in the wording would be good, but not using "rape":

Hope this is the right thread for this. From MoveOn.org:  Redefining Rape?

excerpt:

A far-reaching anti-choice bill, introduced by Republican Chris Smith and supported by 173 members of the House, includes a provision that could redefine rape and set women's rights back by decades.

Right now, federal dollars can't be used for abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or when the woman's life is in danger. But the Smith bill would narrow that use to "cases of 'forcible' rape but not statutory or coerced rape."

As far too many women know, bruises and broken bones do not define rape - a lack of consent does. Please sign the petition today.

Thanks for posting that, Boom Boom.  Mother Jones has a good overview about what #DearJohn - Speaker John Boehner - and his RepubliCons are attempting to do.  And these two NYTimes op-ed describe the situation succinctly, one at the federal and the other at the state level.
