I'm worried about my lovely old Renzo, my best friend in the world. He is peeing a lot and seems unhappy at times, though he is still extremely affectionate and frisky. The worry is kidney trouble, which takes many if not most elderly cats.

As soon as I manage to cash an inheritance cheque (this is rather problematic, though I have it in hand) I'm taking him to the vet's, though I'm afraid I know the diagnosis and prognosis.

The inheritance cheque is pitifully small - no money in my family, alas. Will buy me a much-needed new computer, some accountancy fees and of course a few vet's visits.

So sorry to hear this Lagatta, I'm afraid we both have very old cats who are having some very senior moments. How do you know exactly Renzo is unhappy if he is affectionate and frisky at times? Sir Scarf is leaving big chunks of fur on the floor and he can't jump up on bed or even to his blankie on the couch w/o using something inbetween to help him.

I think I'll do the same, go to the vets and find out if unhappy/in pain/or what.

Unhappy because he sometimes cries out, in a mournful deep (but not loud) yowl, though he has food and water, and his box is clean, and he has certainly been petted and fussed over.

I went out on my front balcony this evening, just to watch the dripping, the melting snow, the happy kids. Renzo followed me and sniffed at everything as if in anticipation.

Haven't seen any robins yet, other birdies (I can't identify) yes. Big buds on lilacs and some other early bushes.

Ah jeebs I forgot about the vocal chords. Yes same here. Sometimes he sounds like he's howling, but as soon as he finds his comfort it is over. Have you noticed anything else?
If Scarfers is in a deep sleep and leaning against me (always leaning against me whenever he can) and I move or jostle or change position, he wakes up with a cry and looks all around, like he was so deep into his dream (snores like crazy now too) he seems stunned to find out he is awake.

Boom Boom, he wears it well 8) - Renzo is a most dapper tomcat.

Toe, yeah, things like that, and now he climbs atop me when I am sound asleep and drapes himself over me (I usually sleep on my side), and purrs. Usually it doesn't wake me up, but I have strange dreams.

I wonder if skdadl's cats are still alive and well. Her Minnie and Tildie are exactly the same age as Renzo.

Hoping both Renzo and Sir Scarf hang in there with only a very slow decline, lagatta and Toe.  :hug

Fearless is moving on to 9 years old and we keep thinking that maybe he should go for a vet's visit just to ensure he's doing well.

Sending good vibes Renzo's way.  :bigeyes

Just read further up, good vibes to Scarfie too!  :cat

And, I've just been reliably informed, all celebrating their birthdays today. Minerva and Mathilda are 16, Guinevere is 15, Olive and Philibert are 13 and Gracie is 5.

Thildie is apparently a bit wobbly but she's wobbling on.

So I didn't Scarfs to the vet yest. I waited. Why? Because my very next door nabes said their cat (Buster) in his prime, had something last week that lasted 4 days and told me to wait another day before I took Scarf. Possibly some sort of feline infection (is it in the air?). They know I haven't much money as they. So I'm doing an all'nighter tonight. Exact same symptons. Scarf will drink water when I put it to him, but will not eat, more than 48 hours now. He drinks when I take it to him. He used the litter box tonight and then went back to his blankie.
The vet said to take him to the Animal Hospital, which would be about 70 bucks round trip, shit eh, not counting x-rays, blood tests etc., which I'm sure would be hundreds of dollars. Gawd I hate this. He's still purring from his purr box tho, which is comforting. If he is just as feeble in the a.m. I am taking him in.

Scarfie is only 16, almost 17, how do I tell the vet NO he has never had any shots in his entire life, don't do that. It could kill him now. Plus when I move he will be indoors from then on. This is a male cat who ran with the wolverines in his prime. I stay up and comfort him. HIs one blind eye looks totally bizarre right now, well both of his eyes do, but the blind one looks gone, whereas before it didn't look so bad.

A friend in Vancouver said 'but your moving and HE knows that', I almost hung up on him, so stupid. A sick cat is a sick cat, an old sick cat who knows more than we do about hisself is worse. G'nite.

"how do I tell the vet NO he has never had any shots in his entire life?"

Just tell them. It's your money, your cat.

Hoping the morning finds you both feeling better.

Alison, unfortunately some vets, like some human doctors, are very judgemental and simply can't grasp the lack of funds many of their clients live with. (Fortunately our Brebis is an exception).

I do hope old Scarf will pull through okay. Renzo has gone out in the back garden - its nice if he can scratch the earth and catch some scents.
