Rideau Canal Murders
« on: October 26, 2011, 01:33:57 PM »
I looked everywhere and could not find this case under anything I used for search. This is the case of Zainab Shafia, 19, Sahar Shafia, 17, and Geeti Shafia, 13, all sisters, as well as Rona Amir Mohammed, 50, their father's first wife murdered by drowning in car. Alleged honour killings. Something I've been following on Prime Crime for awhile now, then stopped while waiting for jury to be picked. I was mad as hell when I first read this story in the early summer of '09. I'm still angry now that I've read the Nissan had a window partially opened and they or one even could have escaped. Were those women that terrified to not even attempt it, it seems they just piled on top of each other for comfort. So fucking sad.

Toe, that is because the alleged homicides were in the Rideau Canal, in or near Kingston, and not the Welland Canal, which is south of Hamilton. The Welland Canal was built so ships could navigate between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, despite Niagara Falls.

I know we have discussed this, both because it is such a horrible femicide case and also because there has been debate about the legitimacy of the term "honour killings".

Thank you Lagatta, I changed the subject title, will it now always show up as Rideau? I hope so. Yes I simply was in a hurry and we did discuss it I know, but I can't find it and I wish I could just because I wanted to re-read the term 'honour killings'. To me femicide is misogynist murder, does that exclude women who partake of such murders to protect the honour of their families? Honour killings describes a cultural practice as in the right to life of women is conditional on their obeying social norms and traditions. So I'm :confused  What do human rights lawyers call it? I don't know yet. Has Gendercide been used? The Unwanted Ones.
P.S. couldn't find using Rideau Canal either.

Driver's window was fully down said police diver who videoed it.

You can drown elsewhere and then be put in a car that is submerged in water.
You can drown while unconscious.

Many failures in protection to the Shafia girls. Yes, I know, Rosie di Manno can get into purple prose (and worse, blind defence of the 1% against those pesky Occupy people) but she is sticking to the facts here (article corresponds to accounts in the francophone media).

Edited to add: More from La Pressse about Youth Protection alerts (in French): http://tinyurl.com/ShafiaDPJ

(DPJ is the abbreviation, used in French and in English here, for Youth Protection).

The stories of the daughters and their friends, including Zainab's Pakistani sweetie Ammar, are heartbreaking. I hope that young man is able to cope with his feelings of guilt as well as loss.

This, if anything, is sadder still. Many people, including her maths teacher Fathia Boualia (that is a Maghrebi, North African name) were trying to help but there was still a horrible failure of youth protection - to say nothing of protection to the middle-aged wife number one.

The jury begins deliberation tomorrow. There are only 3 options says judge. Manslaughter is Not one of them. The 3 murderers can each get different verdicts.

What the jurors didn't hear. It's obvious why the only 'witness' couldn't testify, he was 8 years old and lord knows how he could have said he got up for water at 1:40 and went back to bed at 2:00 a.m. Altho everything he heard sounds just about right.

P.S. And hey Tooba, if you don't get 1st Degree, I'll have to go to a Voodoo friend for a real good spell. Ooooo

And then there is the worrying failure of child protection, though as the article makes clear, there are no perfect solutions, and pulling teens out of the home means a universe of shelters and foster homes:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/could-quebec-child-services-have-stopped-the-shafia-deaths/article2318277/singlepage/#articlecontent

I guess that will be the fate of the surviving younger Shafia children. The whole story is so horrible.
