Mars
« on: July 31, 2006, 02:46:01 PM »
I just received this in an email (along with some pretty pictures). Does anyone know whether this is all true?

Quote
The Red Planet is about to be spectacular!

This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an  encounter that
will culminate in the closest  approach between the two planets in
recorded  history. The next time Mars may come this close is
in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on
Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be
certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth
in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as
60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when
Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and
will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in
the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9
and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest
75-power magnification...   [photos appear]

Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.

Mars will be easy to spot. At the
beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m.
and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are
closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its
highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty
convenient to see something that no human being has
seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at
the beginning of August to see Mars grow
progressively brighter and brighter throughout the
month.

I received it as well and I don't know. I'm suspecting one needs a telescope for Mars to appears as big as the moon. The e-mail doesn't mention THAT of course. But I just don't know.

I guess I should have googled first:

Quote
For the third time in three years, people are writing to us, amazed and confused about a new email in their inboxes announcing, among other things, that Mars will be closer than ever in recorded history in August 2006.

What's more, the email says, "Mars will look as large as the full moon to the unaided eye."

But, although it contains a grain of truth, this email is a hoax.

Mars will NOT be particularly close to Earth in August 2006.

The email is a rehash from 2003. Though based in a true event from that year, it was wildly exaggerated the first time it circulated.

Now you tell me.

Anyone want to buy a huge, roof-sized sign that says "Take Me With You"?

Heh.

At a slight tangent, but does anyone know offhand -- is "recorded history" only 5,000 years long? ie: do we have no writing from before about 3000 BC?

I would imagine that "recorded history" varies by what it is you want recorded.  Weather patterns, for example, may or may not have been recorded, and the appearance of large planets you'd think would have, but then we'd be searching Ye Olde Writings for "Huge Planet" when we should probably be looking for "Evil Omen" or "Proof That We Offended Some God Or Other".  Cave paintings, however, have documented the fact that we were once stick figures (who ironically hunted with sticks) on a two-dimensional plane.  This much we know.

Anyway, having 5,000 years of recorded history isn't so bad, considering the earth is only 6,000 years old.

Yours in Christ,

Nah, everyone knows writing was invented for junk mail -- "Guaranteed Club Enlargement!" "Make 100 Flints a Week Working from your Cave!", etc.

Only a little before that, apparently.

The first known examples of writing may have been unearthed at an archaeological dig in Pakistan.

So-called 'plant-like' and 'trident-shaped' markings have been found on fragments of pottery dating back 5500 years.

They were found at a site called Harappa in the region where the great Harappan or Indus civilisation flourished four and a half thousand years ago.

I still get junk email wanting to enlarge my penis :blahblah . Aren't larger  penises highly overrated?  :party1  Drat, some dark clouds approaching. :rain: A larger penis won't protect me from the rain, so why bother with it?  :?  Don't mind me, I'm going for a ride, rain or no rain. :bike (a larger penis won't make the bike any faster). :ducking

I think the idea is that you won't really care if it rains, or how fast your bike goes.  Your every waking moment will be spent sexing up women (or, optionally, dudes).  :)

Are you saying this email is redundant nowadays, Boom Boom, or perhaps always has been?

Wasn't there a recent discovery of pre-cambrian episodic cavern drawings of men with minuscule weaponry, then a sub-group engaging in the application of special ointments upon their endowments and then returning to their village with larger tools?  They were found in the Italian Via Gra peninsula, were they not?

Why does everything have to be about S-E-X? Drat. I'm single, and will likely stay that way. Why do I have to continously be fed S-E-X-U-A-L stimuli? Must be a Commie plot to drive us crazy before our time.  :spy:

Yes, and specifically in the Levitra mountain range.

Later claims that these were predated by similar drawings in the Cialis isthmus of Greece were shown to be fraudulent.
