Olympic Games
« on: August 01, 2006, 10:33:24 AM »
Indexing (yet) another sociology text. There's a chapter on the Olympics; well, really using the Olympics as an example of how 'our' thinking changes about issues like amateurism, high-performance sport, and drug use.

As usual, I've learned a bunch of stuff I did not know.

For example: the 1996 Atlanta games were not the first 'Coke Games'. Coca Cola started sponsoring the games back in 1928. (i.e. the IOC sold out way earlier.)

FIFA started the World Cup in 1930 partly to compete with the Olympics and partly because soccer was not well represented in the games because most of the world's premier players were pros even back then.

The torch relay was a Nazi innovation, evoking, according to this author, the 'victorious torchlight parade through the Brandenburg Gate. . .when Hitler took power on 30 January 1933'.

Leni Riefenstahl's film about the Berlin games is very interesting to watch, no matter what you think of her.

Debra, you should read , The Lords Of The Rings second edition about the commercial circus Adidas owner Dassler and Samaranch turned the Olympics in.

The writers do not mention 1928 as date for the first Coke sponsorship of the games but they do mention how Adi Dassler with Samaranch's help began the modern trend with the Melbourne games IIRC.

(Keep in mind that amateurship was strictly enforced and Jesse Owens, for instance, had his medals taken away for having taken some money years before in some minor league baseball.)

IIRC the company founded by Dassler still "controls" the awarding of sponsorships.

Have you all been keeping up with the mother of all games, the Olympics? In the UK? It's a goddam hoot.

Remember when there were no more tickets? Well now suddenly there are so many no one knows what to do with them all. Turns out the hoity toity are trying to sell them off. Security? OMG it's a military exercise. The weather? They need a Sun Dance. Doping tests among the athletes will be hilarious. Political divides and boycotts already happening. It's turning into a masters class of incompetence, theft and treachery and as usual on the backs of the taxpayer. Let's just keep our fingers crossed, even pray, that innocents are not mistaken for terrerorrerrists and mowed down in a hail of bullets, gawd knows, they've already told us there are 'bad' people roaming (Veteran Terrororrists from Afghanistan no less) about the entire olympic grounds w/o any control whatsoever!!! Holy Smote in your Eye! Ya think the military induced fear will keep people at home? Only the PTB knows I guess, cuz I sure wouldn't know. And remember This Is The Safest Place To Be. Television seems to be the safest vehicle these days, omg.

"Bodies In Motion" was an online video produced by NBC in which women competing in various Olympic sports were featured in softcore, fetishist slow-motion highlights, while porn-tastic jazz music played on the soundtrack.

Patrick Burke was on CBC this morning suggesting an alternative to the proposed international boycott of the Russian Sochi Olympics.

“Show the world that there are elite LGBT athletes who are not afraid to be themselves, on and off the playing field”

ETA: Just saw the comments following the article - strong majority support a complete boycott.

Didn't read the article or the comments BB, but a boycott is just plain stupid.
