Having read this I thought we could use a dumb ass thread for things that don't deserve their own thread but have made you hurt your eyes reading.

FURTADO: 'FEMINISM TURNED ME AGAINST MEN'

Quote
NELLY FURTADO has turned her back on her feminist past because she fears it "brainwashed" her into hating men. The LIKE A BIRD singer admits she dabbled with women's rights when she first became a star, but now she's a single mum with a "secret boyfriend" she's a huge fan of guys.

Apparently she doesn't have to worry about that "16 IQ points / 40% less chance of marriage" issue.

I, on the other hand am glad for Xeno's paradoxes.

1. She has a feminist past? :o
2. She has a past? (isn't she like, 23 or something?) Sorry I don't mean to be ageist or anything, but to have a past, you have to have some years under your belt.

Oh, OK - she dabbled in feminist rights.

She tried the serious artiste "folklorico" trip last CD out and it was commercially disappointing (relatively speaking).  Apparently she's going to flog her new incarnation by performing on Canadian Idol next week.

Trying to get a new audience for whom feminism is a bad word??

Quote
(AP) - A patient wearing an oxygen mask tried to light a cigarette in his hospital room, sparking a fire that forced the evacuation of more than 100 patients, destroyed the room and melted medical equipment, officials said.

A nurse rescued the man from his burning bed shortly after the Thursday night blaze started. He suffered serious burns and was taken to the burn unit at another Dallas hospital. No one else was hurt, hospital officials said.

"He somehow got the strength to smoke a cigarette with a non-removable mask," Dallas Fire-Rescue Capt. Paul Martinez said. "I don't know how he did it, but he did it."

That's dumb.  But getting back to Nelly Furtado and her whole thing about feminists hating men.  I have proof that feminists are compassionate, caring and tolerant people.  The proof?   Well, this is largely a feminist board.  If feminists hate men, it would naturally follow that "they" would especially hate me.  Yet I have lasted far longer on BreadnRoses than I ever did on EnMasse.  And, aside from my initial run on Rabble (April 2004 - December 2004 -- they banned me right before Christmas!!!) I have lasted far longer here than on Rabble.  So clearly, feminists aren't as bad as they're cracked up to be by Nelly Furtado.

From the NewsHounds comes this Keith Olbermann clip of a man pulled over for speeding and for listening to Bill O'Reilly so loud it could be heard more than 25 ft. away.

The man calls the officer a "donut-eater" and "a swine" and repeatedly tells the officer he should be ashamed of himself.

Judy writes: "At last, empirical evidence that listening to Fox News' Bill O'Reilly turns people into jerks."

Quote
A man suffered internal burns when he tried to launch a rocket from his bottom on Bonfire Night.

Paramedics found the 22-year-old bleeding and with Black Cat Thunderbolt Rocket lodged inside him when they attended the scene in Sunderland.

He suffered a scorched colon and is now recovering in hospital, where his condition is described as stable.

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said the prank could have been fatal.

Douglas McDougal, from the NEAS, said: "We received a call stating there was a male who had a firework in his bottom and it was bleeding.

"He sustained fairly significant injuries in the fact that there's huge damage to that particular area."

WTF?

Quote
Michael Richards exploded in anger as he performed at a famous L.A. comedy club last Friday, hurling racial epithets that left the crowd gasping, and TMZ has obtained exclusive videoof the ugly incident.

Richards, who played the wacky Cosmo Kramer on the hit TV show "Seinfeld," appeared onstage at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood. Kyle Doss, an African-American, told TMZ he and some friends were in the cheap seats and he was playfully heckling Richards when suddenly, the comedian lost it.

The camera started rolling just as Richards began his attack, screaming at one of the men, "Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a f***ing fork up your ass."

Only 60% voted that the shithead is a racist, and that included my vote.

I refuse to vote on whether he or Gibson is worse.

There is a French comedian of African descent, Dieudonné, who has passed from attacking Zionism to full-out anti-Jewish rants. He attended the racist Front National party's congress recently, hoping to make points as a good anti-semite, albeit of the wrong skin tone. But at the same time, Martine Le Pen (the daughter of Jean-Marie) was also making overtures to one of the vigilante Jewish groups (either the local chapter of the Jewish Defence League or Betar) because THEY are anti-Arab. Oy.

Anyone who tries to get racists on their side by telling them to persecute some other ethnic, religious or racial group...   Oy Gewalt.

Apparently the racist incident at comedy club The Improv was not the first time Michael Richards, better known as his character Kramer, has gone off at the audience and uttered things he shouldn't have.  Reports are coming out that in April he had shouted anti-semitic remarks at the audience in much the same way.  Richards' publicist confirmed that Richards did make the remarks but that it was part of his act, but audience members don't feel that that was the case.

Why do people always think mental-health issues are due to "substance abuse"?

Indeed, many mentally-ill people may well seek solace there, compounding their problems, but often the root cause lies far deeper.

A couple of days ago I ended up on the Letterman site (don't ask; long story) and saw that they had a clip of Richards' appearance (long distance), talking to Letterman and Richards' friend Jerry Seinfeld, who'd convinced Letterman to give the guy a chance to talk and apologize.

I found it very moving, actually. He seems stunned, although entirely rational. The more I listened to him, the more I was thinking of Lenny Bruce, which is a long and similarly affecting story. Bruce was ferociously funny, but his humour arose from personal fury as well as an exceptionally keen and brave political critique. Put the two together and you had explosions -- of genius, but also of self-destruction. Mind you, you could say the same thing of Jonathan Swift, eg (who probably ended up with dementia, or maybe it was tinnitus bad enough to drive him bananas).

I don't mean to make the romantic argument about artistic genius being allied to madness, although there are so many examples. There are counter-examples too -- Tom Lehrer was a near contemporary of Bruce's with a similarly fierce take on American politics and a similarly sharp wit, and yet he did not consume himself.

But watching and listening to Richards, I was starting to make some sense of what he did. He was trying something outrageous in his act and it just wasn't working -- it was a dumb gambit (dumb in the way that a lot of pop music is, actually), and he tried to get out of it by going even further over the top.

At the same time, there seems no question that his comedy comes from a space of some personal anger.

Maybe he self-medicates -- a lot of people do. And I agree with lagatta that that explains nothing to anyone except, maybe, the psychiatrists who have a vested interest in creating angelically mindless categories like "substance abuse."

Anyway. I hope he pulls out of this. It was an interesting segment to watch, and I ended up feeling a lot of respect for Jerry Seinfeld.

Well, yes, I can imagine that, although do we think that Seinfeld fans are less likely to want to watch the shows over? I can certainly live without them, but I would think a lot of people would be even more curious to watch Richards/Kramer again, looking for signs of something.

Anyway, it was interesting and affecting to hear them talk.

I canit imagine why anyone would want to shell out for Seinfeld DVDs, given that the series is available somewhere on replay at any one moment. I've been watching replays of this series for years now, probably have seen every episode. I'm starting to avoid the series because it's just not funny anymore - a bunch of whiny New Yorkers, basically. The only one who now interests me in the slightest is Julia Louis-Dreyfuss - I think she's the best of the lot.

No Fat Chicks (http://www.orlandoweekly.com/features/story.asp?id=11239)

Ok, so first the actual story.

Quote
Spath’s a busy guy, so he paid a dating service to cull the fat chicks from his dating pool. All was well when he lived in Miami, where the ratio of slim chicks to fat chicks is apparently much higher. But when he moved home to Orlando this past spring, the same dating service he used in South Florida wasn’t providing him “high-quality” women. “Big boobs, big ass, kinda chunky,” is how he describes the single ladies of Events and Adventures of Orlando.

Spath says he was promised that he’d be mingling with sophisticated, professional — and slim — women. Instead his potential pairings were “predominantly and severely overweight, and of low social economic status.”

And so, this being America, he filed a lawsuit. Spath wants his money back.

What an asshat, eh? But then it gets better. He's actually a delusionally, inane asshat!

Quote
Kurt Spath thinks Kurt Spath is quite the catch.

“I do,” he says. “Without being so superficial, I mean, I do. I’m 36, never married, 6 feet, 2 inches, about 200 pounds. I’ve even got a profile on Match.com.”

On Match.com, where he goes by the screen name “I_Am_Employed,” Spath describes himself as a “dog person.” He likes to cook, and is one of those people who, when they write “I like to cook,” follows it with “BAM!” Favorite things? “Browsing the tool corral at Home Depot. GRUNT! All they need is cocktail service and I would never leave.”

He’s an insurance adjuster by profession. And if you think that sounds boring, you don’t know Kurt Spath. “I work in a fun part of the industry!” he writes on the site, “adjusting. But, I admit, I am evil, I cheer when a hurricane vacuumes up a trailer park because it makes me $$$$$$$.”

    What a tool.

Okay, sorry, snark over, but this just made me laugh.

it seems to be the perfect time ask Spath the obvious question: Why not just go out to the bars and pick up girls like everybody else?

I knew a lady in Fort McMurray - she was large .... serious large, in fact it eventually killed her.

But she had a daughter - she was large too. Daughter ran off to the Peace River country and got a job. A job with a "dating agency" specializing in large women.

About a week later I received a phone call from her asking if I could come up with some bail for her ... she was busted on a criminal assault charge.

As I heard later, she went on her first date to a motel there and her conversation with the "date' ended abruptly with:

Unless Smitherman is willing to soil his diaper and stay in legislature the entire day without changing his soiled diaper, then he's a complete and utter Ass, sharing DNA with Mike Harris.

Quote
Health Minister George Smitherman says he's “seriously considering” wearing an adult diaper to see if it's adequate for Ontario seniors.

He was responding to complaints that Ontario seniors are wearing soiled diapers for hours on end because nursing homes in the province aren't meeting proper standards of care.

Mr. Smitherman says there's been an evolution in incontinence products which makes them more absorbent and that a decision was made to use them across the province's system.

He says looking into concerns raised about the use of the products.

Tomorrow I take the jerk apart at our place. That is so disgusting, and it really hurts people, y'know? It hurts me.

I have on file the famous weepy interview Smitherman gave a great Toronto Star reporter shortly after the Libs came into office -- she had done a brilliant series on Ontario nursing homes and she showed him some of the most dramatic stories; he wept for the cameras, et bleeding cetera. He promised the world to chronic-care patients ... and since then he has done fork all.

The smug arrogance of that man, counting pennies by counting disposable pants -- and of course the staff time required to change them -- there is a very low ring in hell reserved for Mr Smitherman.

While dishing out dinner I heard the teevee news. Rushed to tellie and the nurses who work at nursing homes said they are Not Allowed (is that gov't regulation?) to change them Until the diapers are 75% full! So she held the one up she soaked in water to demonstrate 75% full and it was just dripping. The nurse said she is embarrassed for the residents.

Kormos and Tory both tore a strip off Smitherman. Also there was some sort of half-assed pathetic excuse that there is just no more money to go around. Oh and McPointy Head actually worked at a nursing home as a young man and did change adult diapers.

A friend called to tell me there is a current human rights case brought against long term care by a senior. He can't for the life of him remember where he read it. But his mom is in a facility and he's furious that Smitherman did this showboating during this human rights case, and timed it perfectly with a message.

Anyway from what he can remember the senior is saying the human rights violation is re: the provincial long term care is increasing their vulnerability or dependence, which is not allowed in any health sector.

My friend's own mother is in a long term senior facility in Burlington I believe. She does have control of her bladder, but is forced to wear diapers because no staff to guide her to the bathroom. As well she is made to sit in a wheelchair the entire day. The only time an attendance comes is to wheel for mealtimes. If she insists on no diapers or to be able to sit in a chair in her room, she will be basically left there the entire day with no means to leave. Which of course increases her dependence and vulnerability, because of staffing shortages, and that is why he is so interested in the hr tribunal. He will try to find it for me.
This tribunal is important because it is a governance issue and has the potential to explode in all health sectors for Vulnerable Groups.

I'm glad your friend is pursuing this as a human rights violation because it most certainly is.

Is the severe lack of staffing a result of the Harris cutbacks? Is staffing as bad in other provinces? I wonder because last year I had to do research on some huge multinationals who have gotten a foothold in Canadian nursing institutions and hospitals. Compass and Sodexho are two of the giants and there have been complaints about the substandard practices and care, including extreme cost cutting measure. They are also notorious for poor labour relations (including extreme anti-unionization). These companies managed to enter the Canadian market through Public Private Partnerships. In the US and UK, they provide all the food and maintenance services for schools and prisons.

We need a really good analysis of the ownership of long-term care homes in Ontario, and if I weren't such a slug, I'd be on the case. CUPE would probably be a good place to start.

There are real differences in homes, and they have to do with ownership, even though the province funds them all for certain things at the same level. The city of Toronto, eg, runs one long-term care home in each of the old boroughs; my T was in one of those, and they are supposed to have higher than necessary standards -- I sort of believe that, having seen several  private homes, but I don't know how that works. The careworkers would all be employed and paid under the same regime by the province, as would all the nurses, but perhaps it is up to the individual owners to decide how many of each to hire? I just don't know.

I wish that CUPE would publish something good on the subject. I'm sure the Harris cutbacks hurt and have not been fully restored, but with long-term care you're looking at public-private systems, so there is some variation through the system as a whole.

Ottawa also has a few not-for-profit long term care residences; OHIP covers all the medical care/staffing component for both type of establishments.

Do they pay commercial tax rates?  If not, that may explain why the residents rooms are bigger, the facilities are cleaner, there are more paid and volunteer staff and the food quality seems better.

There are also excellent long-term care homes run privately by organizations like, eg, the Salvation Army -- I haven't visited, but the Meighen Centre here is supposed to be great. I've also heard wonderful things about Kensington Gardens, which somehow sprang out of the old Doctors' Hospital. I think those are both not-for-profit as well.

The homes to be avoided are the ones run by profit-making corpses -- srsly. I feel so sorry for the people stuck in those.

There are also entirely private facilities that are not part of the CCAC system. They are much more expensive, but in our brief experience, they are not necessarily better. They may look more posh, and they may work as retirement homes for people who are still able to enjoy posh life, but they don't usually have the depth of experience with severe illness that the CCAC homes do.

One of the reasons people end up in bad places is that the majority of admissions for dementia residents are emergency admissions, and the CCAC rules force people into very narrow choices on short notice. The rules can be very perverse -- they get revised often, so I don't know how bad they are now, but if there is a bed shortage, the province copes by punishing the applicants, putting them through more and more hoops. George Smitherman is never going to talk honestly about that problem, but it does mean that we have classes of care in Ontario.

I can't wait until Midnight, sorry (I know I'm not a blogger, but trying to adhere to CC's request.
Imagine a t-shirt can put the FEAR of God into these fucktards?

An 80-year-old church deacon was removed from the Smith Haven Mall yesterday in a wheelchair and arrested by police for refusing to remove a T-shirt protesting the Iraq War. Police said that Don Zirkel, of Bethpage, was disturbing shoppers at the Lake Grove mall with his T-shirt, which had what they described as “graphic anti-war images.” Zirkel, a deacon at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch, said his shirt had the death tolls of American military personnel and Iraqis - 4,000 and 1 million - and the words “Dead” and “Enough.” The shirt also has three blotches resembling blood splatters. (http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/03/30/7974/)

Imagine, blotches resembling blood violated their delicate sensibilities.    Fucktards! Wonder what our t's are gonna say and depict when we're 80?

Isn't that a mindnumber? They love to pick on older folks, my personal thought is that they are trying to instill fear into the rest of us.
If they will arrest an elderly gentleman for something so stupid...what won't they do?
Shameful.

The irony of it is likely that the man is a veteran of a war, possibly the Korean.

Here (http://www.newsday.com/news/local/crime/ny-lizirk0331,0,2154627.story) he is, in this online Newday story, wearing his T-shirt.

Holy crap.  I kept clicking and ended up here (http://www.eyeweekly.com/city/features/article/22843).

Not only is this creature from Toronto (as evidenced by the 416), but seems to be this guy (http://www.dimitrithelover.com/).

Perhaps an upgrade is in order from the Dumb Ass thread to the Asshole one.

This one passed the audition (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-20030572-504083.html):

Quote
Wilkins jumped out a window and fled; however, he left behind a   crucial piece of evidence - that charging cell phone, which police found   during their search of the home.
Detectives called one of the   contacts in Wilkins' phone and told the female who answered that the   owner of the phone had been involved in an incident, and that they   needed to know his name, reports The Washington Post. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/02/AR2011020206010_2.html?sid=ST2011020303630)
Detectives went to Wilkins' apartment where he was reportedly attempting to flush jewelry down his toilet.
