While refereed at breakfast I only had time to skim Bab's column on power as an ultimate aphrodisiac and how if Hillary becomes pres men will be lining up to sleep with her. :rotfl:

Page 2 of the Globe includes this tidbit of info based on a British survey.

"The average man spends 22 weeks of his life hanging around stores while his partner buys clothes, says the survey. When men shop for clothese, however, women help."

Certyainly not my experience. Ms. C. and I shop on our own to buy our respective clothes.

Politics / Provincial Political Cultures
« on: July 16, 2007, 12:55:09 PM »
I've started this thread at the suggestion of dBO. (Thanks, Dbo). I stated in the TO thread that Alberta was the one provincial political culture that I always had difficulty "understanding" when I studied Canadian history. Born as a province along with Saskatchewan in 1905, it has had a history of single party hegemonic politics since 1921 (?). First the UFA, then the Socreds and now the PCs. It was the birthplace of two now defunct  national parties (Socreds and Reform) and seems to exhibit the spirit of Turner's Frontier Thesis. I was hoping Skdadl or someone else who has lived in Alberta or currently lives there (Kuri) could reflect upon this province's unique political culture. We could also discuss other provinces' political culture in this thread.

News / Security Certificates
« on: February 23, 2007, 10:44:11 AM »
The Supreme Court of Canada has struck down the security certificate system used by the federal government to detain and deport foreign-born terrorist suspects.

In a 9-0 judgment, the court found that the system, described by government officials as a key tool for safeguarding national security, violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

But the court suspended the judgment from taking legal effect for a year, giving Parliament time to write a new law complying with constitutional principles.

New Brunswickers want better access to abortion services, according to the results of a public opinion poll conducted in December.

The poll by Omnifacts Bristol Research found 57 per cent of respondents believe that abortions should be available in medical clinics, said Maryse Courville, a senior research consultant with the firm.

Another 40 per cent said they'd agree under certain strict conditions.

Feminist News / Berlusconi's wife demands apology
« on: January 31, 2007, 08:53:26 AM »
ROME, Italy (Reuters) -- The wife of Italy's former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi demanded a public apology from him on Wednesday for sexist quips that she said were "damaging to my dignity," in a bitter front-page letter to a leading newspaper.

Berlusconi told some women at a TV awards dinner last week that "if I wasn't already married I would marry you right away," and "with you I'd go anywhere," she said in the letter.

Veronica, Berlusconi's second wife and mother of three of his children, said the comments belittled her and that she only decided to take her marital spat public after failing to win an apology in private.

"These are affirmations that I see as damaging to my dignity, affirmations that ... cannot be reduced to jokes," wrote Veronica, a former actress. "To my husband and to the public man I therefore ask for a public apology, having not received one privately."

The letter, a huge embarrassment to Berlusconi, was given extra sting by his wife's decision to publish it in Italy's top left-leaning La Repubblica newspaper, which is sharply critical of the leader of the centre-right political opposition.
