Susan Delacourt gives the backstory on the PMO leak re Trudeau's speaking fees.

Not The Star's finest moment and her honesty about it is interesting.

Africa / War in Congo
« on: June 18, 2013, 01:53:58 PM »
UN has 3,000 enforcers.Almost unnoticed, the UN is about to fight its first war. That is a gamble worth taking (according to the Economist)

The risks in Congo are considerable. The terrain is tricky and local allies are unreliable. The 3,000 UN enforcers are not especially cohesive or powerful and some may have ulterior motives, including the defence of business interests. That could damage the UN’s reputation and undermine its mission. Furthermore, Congo suffers from far more than violence. Political institutions are dilapidated, corruption is rife, poverty is widespread and ethnic tensions run deep. No armed force can fix all that. Peace alone will still leave most Congolese in misery.Nonetheless, the new UN initiative deserves wide support. All previous efforts to end the bloodshed have failed. The recent history of war-torn African countries like Sierra Leone shows that peace brought about by foreign troops can boost political reforms and generate prosperity. Liberal interventionism is an unfashionable creed; in poor, benighted Congo, it is still worth trying. http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21579462-almost-unnoticed-un-about-fight-its-first-war-gamble-worth-taking-art
The business interests are copper mines. http://www.africa-confidential.com/broCwse-by-country/id/53/CONGO-KINSHASA

Children as young as 8 are forced to work in those mines. But who will watch the UN forces, they have been known to rape, make deals with whoever etc.

Erdogan is calling in the army. He still thinks it's about the park so of course that's what the world is talking about, what a sham.

Wow, twitter picture of protests in Brazil.

https://twitter.com/Pat_Galvao/status/346772488379846657/photo/1

The protests over a hike in mass transit fares from $1.5 to $1.6 began 10 days ago in Sao Paulo, days before the opening of the Confederations Cup. The tournament brings together eight national teams from around the world in six Brazilian host cities.
The unrest rapidly spread to other cities with demonstrators focusing their anger not just on the transport fares but also on $15 billion the government is allocating for the Confederations Cup and the World Cup.
The demonstrators want these resources to be earmarked instead for health care and quality education in a country with vast economic disparity between rich and poor.

DDM picking a fight w/ Hall of Hollinshed (the $21,000 cheque). He is such a slimeball. Mulroney did a fundraiser in Peterborough for him to raise money for his defense, that is how low he has sunk.

In his letter to Scheer, Hall complains that Del Mastro “gratuitously slandered” him behind the shield of parliamentary privilege, seeking to intimidate him and other witnesses in the case.
“I am attempting to comply with my legal duties, as a law-abiding Canadian,” Hall writes. “Mr. Del Mastro’s statements to you appear to be aimed at dissuading me from doing so.”
Hall asks the Speaker to protect him from further attacks, “so that I, and other witnesses, can continue to carry out our legal duty to comply with subpoenas and to cooperate with public investigations of national importance, without fear of persecution or reprisal.”
He also asks Scheer to order Del Mastro to withdraw his remarks and apologize.
In his letter to Harper, Hall asks the prime minister to “put a stop to these shameful acts of interference and intimidation.”

At $600 per person, ticket sales generated roughly $72,000.http://www.thepeterboroughexaminer.com/2013/05/23/mulroney-speaks-at-del-mastro-benefit

Exactly like Iraq. No chain of custody for proof of chemical weapons.

Harper is being cautious and I'm glad for that, hopefully the rest of the world will be.

952,466 have signed. Let's get to 1,000,000
We call on you to ensure that whistleblower Edward Snowden is treated fairly, humanely and given due process. The PRISM program is one of the greatest violations of privacy ever committed by a government. We demand that you terminate it immediately, and that Edward Snowden be recognized as a whistleblower acting in the public interest -- not as a dangerous criminal.

"Dark Side of the Prism" is a Firefox Add-on that provides a soundtrack for our surveilled internet meanderings. The public recently learned that the US National Security Agency's on-going internet surveillance program, Prism, collects data from users of major websites. Many of us already know that any data we might share-- not just Facebook posts, but our search and click pathways and histories-- could be compromised, but we do so anyway. We have normalized this ubiquitous surveillance."Dark Side of the Prism" uses Pink Floyd's aural prism (Dark Side of the Moon) as a playlist to the NSA's tracking efforts, serving as an auditory reminder of how our online activities are surveilled. What hypochondriac questions do you Google in the middle of the night; who do you cyberstalk? Consider those missives the lyrical component to our soundtrack. Download the add on from Mozilla:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he's convinced the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad used chemical weapons.
He's a fucking genius, never took him for a cannibal rebel supporter, but I suppose after Bilderberg/G8/McCain visiting Syria just 2 weeks ago the neo-cons got their marching orders. Better than corruption and scandal at home. The geniuses can't bring in jobs w/ living wages, or invest in communities at home and after all it's not politicians who pay for permanent wars, its the taxpayers who have no voice, no choice, polls be dammed.

Oops I almost forgot, so Harper supports cannibal rebels AND the sexual jihad that has seen girls as young as 14 transported into Syria to service the needs of the FSA, as long as they only rape non-Sunni women?  http://www.indcatholicnews.com/news.php?viewStory=22286

I expect Canada to change their minds any minute now. Let's see if they stick w/ the 'plan' of no interference.

US and Allies lie together on claim that Syria used chemical weapons, 'high confidence' is all it takes for NATO to do a no fly zone. No evidence, same old tricks. Putin - will he deliver on his deliveries? Hope so, Armageddon anyone?

If austerity were the solution to economic stagnation, Spain and Greece would be the most successful nations in Europe. Austerity policy around the world shows no relation between debt and lack of growth. I can only assume free trade with EU is not about creating jobs for Canadians or even lowering prices but making huge profits for corporations, once again ignoring the truth and pushing their own agenda. And we're powerless to do a thing about it, even if there was an election tomorrow and a new party was voted in. It's thoroughly disheartening.

Wow, bad optics here, looks like the NDP were totally outplayed. Cullen cannot claim 'surprise'. These games are getting tiresome.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2013/06/12/pol-mp-expenses-motons-ndp-liberals-caucus.html

The NDP is defending its decision to nix a series of LIberal motions designed to shed light on MPs' expenses.
Tuesday, Liberal leader Justin Trudeau introduced four separate motions fashioned to allow the public to scrutinize how MPs spend taxpayers' money.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday outside the NDP's caucus room, NDP house leader Nathan Cullen accused the Liberals of "making it up as they go along." He said Trudeau had not consulted the NDP about his motions, and is "making it up on the fly."

Something funny about the timing of DDM speaking now, but I don't know what.

Did you ever think Stevie could do impressions? Well he can, and he just nails Joe Clark, it's actually quite funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Ui2PLjOEeCo
Don't have to wonder about the timing of this leak, so dam transparent.
