Activism / Is there someone I can apolgize to for my country?
« on: September 13, 2007, 07:49:22 PM »
Yes.
All those years of smugly looking down our noses at South Africa and the US - all for nought.
Not sure if this helps much, Croghan, well, of course it doesn't, but a number of FN don't support it either - they were not consulted.

Skdadl : 's all good!
Note the current Con position : Baird says it's not a problem at all while Abbott and Benoit say it's so dangerous an issue we mustn't even bring it up.

We've been through all this before. In '87, when people brought up the danger of bulk exports, D'Aquino took out full page ads in national and local papers to say "the people who think this is a problem have confused the words bottled and bulk".
Must not get sidetracked again this time.

SPP : Water is "On the Table"
We have no national water policy and it is on the NAFTA table.
A report from U of T Munk Centre.
No complete online copy of the report yet so apology for linking here to my blog's excerpts instead.

Arborman : The scapegoating and crappy treatment of returning troops has nothing to do with hippies or Hermann Göring or right wing myths.
It's the way societies and individuals and the military treat the people they've sent off to get fucked up and now no longer want back.
After VietNam, the right was angry/shamed that they lost and the left was angry/shamed by there having been a war at all. Sure there were lots of compassionate helping people but it didn't translate into better policies for these new one coming home, did it?. They are still the scapegoats for imperialistic adventures.

Ross is a scientist, enormously principled, and hates spin of any kind, including for our side - "all prop is bad prop"
Important to note that none of the commenters below the post have seen the film yet and neither have I but if it is indeed "anti-war porn" then it won't be up to producing much good, will it?
The demonizing of soldiers after VietNam was pure scapegoating, an excuse to learn nothing about what it means to put human beings in such an environment.
I feel for anti-war commenter "quin", her son in Iraq.

For a start, I would like to know how Zapagringo knows about security arrangements between Washington and Ottawa

Good point. I will ask.
If the answer comes back in Spanish, I do believe we have an excellent Spanish-speaker in the crowd.

A reference links thread with a link back to the original conversation then. That way anyone who thought the link was important could list it and link it back.
[Note to self : I have no clue how to do an internal link here. ]

Melissa MacEwan of Shakespeare's Sister asked Chet to write a piece on SPP for her US audience and he wrote a great one here, which included some criticism of Digby for pooh-poohing SPP.

In the comments below it, MacEwan, who you'll remember was to be John Edwards netroots coordinator until the xians flipped out about it, wrote this :

The whole reason I asked Chet to write this piece is because I could have totally written Digby's post myself, like, three days ago.

That was just two weeks ago.
They have a ton of catching up to do to shift their opposition to corpses and hegemony into this context.
Melissa did also comment that the best way for everyone to go about this was to question and pressure their reps and congresscritters, so they're on the right track here, I think, but I'd still like to see a major print media prog like Hayes give it his blessing in a MSM paper, so other progs would not fear being laughed at for even bringing it up.
That's my mission
Very kind of you to talk to me about this - I know I do go on...
