Well, we could look them up ...   :wink:

But off the top of my head, they mean slightly different things. Being empathic means something like you can read other people's minds. Being empathetic means that you've been inside that experience before or you can put yourself inside that experience very easily.

iow, I think that empathic is the more neutral term. It doesn't necessarily imply something close to identification, just a talent for reading others.

Well, my dictionary (Merriam-Webster) accepts both spellings, and doesn't make a difference. Which makes me not want to use empathy as an adjective....

But I like your distinction. Though I've always used empathetic, because I get empathic confused with emphatic.  :oops:

Well, to me, there's something like a progression that goes

empathic <--> empathetic <--> sympathetic

where sympathetic is perhaps the most sentimental end of things ("I have to be nice to you because you're feeling bad, even if I don't feel it all that much m'self") and empathic is the least ("I can tell what you're feeling"), with empathetic in the middle ("I'm with you because I'm with you").

sank/sunk.  I think the former is the verb and the latter is the adjective?

I sink; I sank; I have sunk. Even though we don't often say, "Ooh, I've sunk," that is the progression of the verb -- present, perfect, past perfect.

We do often say "I am sunk," and there sunk is indeed a predicate adjective. But that is a metaphorical use.

Good morning! And it looks to be one here, too, still a bit of rosy dawn left.
