en anglais:  I wrote to the group Mes aïeux to thank them for setting the record straight with Lifesite regarding the meaning of the song Dégénération.  I expressed my hope that they wouldn't be harassed by virulent emails.  I gave them the link to the blog about the fetus-fetishizers appropriation of their song at Birth Pangs.  I wished them well.

The reply says that Mes aïeux received many, dozens of hateful email messages; that "pro-life" is a paradox, given the hatred such people generate. They want nothing to do with them, particularly as many seem to be religious fanatics who speak to them of God and all that.

The group will not speak out anymore, as it gives Lifesite too much importance.

But I will do a follow-up piece shortly at Birth Pangs about this.

Nice to hear that from them, because although I also liked the "toune" of their "tube" Dégénerations, the lyrics struck me as thoroughly reactionary, not only in terms of abortion and nostalgia for the bad old days of huge families and Church control, but also the stereotyped wealthy boomer generation - in that respect they reminded me of such shitheads as Richard Martineau of Voir.

Perhaps I (we - friends too) read too much into it.

Thanks for sharing that dBO. Mes Aïeux is probably my fave contemporary Québécois group (I luv Beau Dommage as well), and I have one of their CDs - not the one with Dégénération. It's called Ça parle au diable! (It contains the kind of title and songs that anti-choice Christians abhor. Mwahah.) My favourites on that one are Remède miracle and Descendus au chantier.

But when I played the video Dégénération from Youtube,  I found out my kid knows all the words to that song, he heard it in music class at school as a musical, not a social, study.

So I was really puzzled, to say the least, when these dum anti-choicers picked up on the song. I was waiting for a long time (and seemingly in vain) for some kind of comment from Mes Aïeux, so I'm glad they finally responded.

To me, the song was just observation - most of their songs are like that. Very entertaining, funny and snappy, but with a heart. They don't say "oh we were so bad back when women had too many children and everybody was poor and Catholic" - and they aren't saying that we're any worse today when we choose to have only 1 or 2. It's simply observation of a changing society, changing times. They're not philosophers or analysts, and they don't moralise. They're songwriters, entertainers for frig's sake. But they do have a position, and I think it was really stupid of the anti-choicers to have kidnapped that song to make it against abortion.

I bet SHE also thinks the poem "Dulce et decorum est" is a pro-military, patriotic statement.
