Mission: Harpoon Harper
« on: September 08, 2008, 10:21:09 AM »
I'm really mistrustful of King Danny and his rule in these parts, but there are times when he comes close to redeeming himself:

Quote
Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams is taking steps to ensure that his MHAs are backing his Anything But Conservative campaign as a federal election approaches.

In an e-mail Williams sent to his caucus, the premier asks them, among other things, to declare whether they support the ABC campaign, and whom they would work for in the federal election, CBC News learned Thursday.

Sources say it's a move sparked by a report that quotes a federal official who suggested not all MHAs were on board, and some are leaking information to the feds.

Steve Kent, MHA for Mount Pearl North, would normally work for the federal Conservatives, but this year he says he will be actively working in his district — getting the word out that everything needs to be done to defeat Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government.

It's a bit early to say, but I've seen lots of liberal campaign posters already, and not a single conservative one.

Yes, that's a great resource. It doesn't look as though they've got a list of all the cuts that we worry about, though.

skdadl, the DAWN Ontario site is still up but is not updated.  I think this will be useful.

ETA this link to the CAUT's original document.

That's a great list too, although as you say, Berlynn, it needs updating.

I do think that the cuts should be regarded as scandals, especially since we've discovered in several cases -- notably with SWC and the arts funding -- that funds are being cut in some places only to be diverted somewhere else -- arts funding to sports, eg. And ending  Court Challenges was pretty clearly revenge for Harper vs Canada, etc.

I do hope people will not simply greet the news that a Harpoid candidate is an Opus Dei spokeswoman with snickers about flagellation and stupid best-sellers made into even lamer Hollywood films.

Opus Dei is a far-right group in league with some of the most vicious fascist regimes of the last century - those of a Latin, Catholic cast above all, including the Franco, Pinochet and Videla et al mass-murdering dictatorships.

Those bastards have the blood of friends of mine on their hands, as well as all the other crimes of hatred, ignorance, sexism, homophobia, and the lot of it. Including the blood of religious people who didn't accept their reactionary interpretation of Christianity.

Nicole Charbonneau Barron, in Saint-Bruno - Saint-Hubert riding, on Montreal's south shore.

(admission - I was hoping with all the Hispanic-fascist references, I'd pique sparqui's ire)...

She also acted as a spokesperson for the fascistic cult in May 2006, protesting the way her sect was depicted in the film Da Vinci Code.

I heard your dog whistle, lagatta.

I'm happy that they selected her only because once again it reveals how ideologically dangerous the Conservatives are. I don't think Duceppe's comments translate well in English but he did call her on her hyper-Catholic ideology being something that voters in Quebec cannot relate too. Of course there was some backsliding from the riding association claiming that they didn't know any of this. RIGHT! They probably recruited her after she signed her name in support of Bill C-484 and the petite mouvement to withdraw Dr. Morgentaler's Order of Canada.

True, but it is important to remember that Opus Dei is not just kinky self-mortification - it is a movement that has had a direct influence on some of the worst fascist regimes in both halves of the 20th century (the Catholic and Latin variety above al)l. I've been googling Opus Dei Franco - Opus Dei Pinochet - Opus Dei Videla and could probably also find stuff on the Brazilian dictatorship that predated the Southern Cone ones by several years...

There is a lot of terrifying stuff (mostly in Spanish).

I'm sure they also have ties to the nutty homophobes and fetish-fetishists in Poland, though I'm less informed about those. (We do know the evil "Radio Maria")...

ODAN has good info, but this is the best I've found so far.
