The 2008 GG's
« on: October 24, 2008, 06:22:13 PM »
Two of my feminist writing friends are on the GG nominees list this year. :applause:

Poetry:

Quote
Ruth Roach Pierson, Toronto, Aide-Mémoire.
(BuschekBooks; distributed by ListDistCo)
(ISBN: 978-1-894543-43-9)
Aide-Mémoire is sophisticated, witty, tender, grieving, ironic, cunning, open-eyed, open-hearted. The poems take us through a lifetime of memories, reflections, and imaginative engagements, traversing several continents and ages, without ever losing their fierce, intimate, ecstatic connection to our common humanity and the living green world,
close-up, and all at once, nested among wheeling stars.

I met Ruth at a writing retreat and loved her immediately.  We went walking one cold winter's day, in search of the elusive owl, and we actually saw it!

Children's Literature:

Quote
Dianne Linden, Edmonton, Shimmerdogs.
(Thistledown Press; distributed by Fitzhenry & Whiteside)
(ISBN 978-1-897235-37-9)
Mike Hopkins is a boy with his own way of dealing with the world around him – one not always understood or appreciated, even by those who love him dearly. Author Dianne Linden inhabits Mike’s world in a story that is life-affirming without ever being sentimental, that is in equal measures tragic, funny and poignant.

Dianne is an absolute sweetheart, fantastic editor, writer and composer!  She edited the first anthology my poetry appeared in.  And our singing circle sings a couple of her songs.  When I saw this one on the list I whooped!

Also on the short-list, all-round nice guy whom I've met and heard read from his work, in Fiction:

Quote
Fred Stenson, Cochrane (Alberta), The Great Karoo.
(Doubleday Canada; distributed by Random House of Canada)
(ISBN 978-0-385-66405-9)
No one writes about cowboys, horses, landscape and the military quite like Fred Stenson. Here is the humour, humanity and insight that can only come from an author who knows what he’s talking about. A
true-hearted book about Canadians caught up in the dark cause of the Boer War.

I hope they have fun at the gala and can find some time to whine about their grants!  ;)

Oh, well. If they can find the time to fit that gala into all the other galas they'll be going to. You know those artists.

When are the Trillium nominees announced?  There's a gala for that, isn't there?  And I'm sure the Albertans have a Book Award Gala, too.  I'm actually thinking I might go to the SK one because several friends have nominations and my publisher has 9 nominations!
