Yossi Sarid:

Quote
It is important that this much is understood from the start - no matter what happens in this war, the crossings into Gaza must open.

A million and a half human beings, most of them downcast and desperate refugees, live in the conditions of a giant jail, fertile ground for another round of bloodletting.

The fact that Hamas may have gone too far with its rockets is not the justification of the Israeli policy for the past few decades, for which it justly merits an Iraqi shoe to the face.
I have no country to fight for; my country is the earth, and I am a citizen of the world.

That is horrible, Toe.

If it is any comfort, many hundreds of brave souls took part in the demo here in Montréal today. We knew it would be mild, but expected rain. No rain after a tiny mist at the beginning, and the sun even came out towards the end. I'd say the majority of participants were from the overlapping Arab, Arab-world,North-African and Middle-Eastern communities (the latter including several Iranians including members of Amir Khadir's wonderfully cultivated family). But a whole slew of anti-Zionist Jews, and in general various QuébécoisEs, francophone, anglophone and allophone.

Some rightwing shithead in Québec City is attacking MNA Amir Khadir for taking part in a peaceful and symbolic SHOE PROTEST:

Shithead calls for censure over peaceful shoe protest

I really wanted to come out, especially since it was held right around the corner from where I am staying. But I had to go see my Mom as my time with her is limited and precious.

Has anyone heard a peep from any Canadian politician except Lawrence Cannon? Iggy? Rae? Jack?

I've been reading posts (some very good, some so-so) and comments at FDL on and off today, and some of the comments just leave me rigid with anger. Even on the Merkin left, there are a lot of clueless people, and then there are the guys who are obviously arriving with teh talking points.

Luckily, there are a lot of people who also get it, more or less, but ...  This not good for the chest.

For mainstream coverage of the situation, I just stick to reading Ha'aretz.  It's much better than reading NA media.  Even the hawks. I'd rather read hawks without blinders than hawks with.  And Gideon Levy is a treasure who would have been drummed out of NA media a decade ago.  In Ha'aretz, he and Amira Hass are merely Cassandras.

Well, some of the Ha'aretz I read today (following links) was also not good for the chest, but I suppose I should explore more.

I feel a sort of double anger at anything that sounds like a rationalization for punishment -- we will teach them a lesson, that sort of thing. To me, that is the voice of the patriarchy, and it drives me simply wild. I also know that it will not work. The smug defiance of any merely decent human argument seems to me incurable.

Al-Jazeera is reporting that nine UN staffers have been killed and that the Gaza university has been attacked. Via Siun at FDL.

Well, I rather liked this Ha'aretz article:

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1050706.html

But yeah, lots of Ha'aretz is about rationalization.  But it's "honest" rationalization, if you know what I mean. I can stomach that more easily.  I pay attention to Israeli media because at this point in time, the only people who have the power to stop this perpetual train wreck are ultimately the Israelis and their backers.

Mandoz and others we all know what this is about - Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party.

eta -The Propaganda continues

Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah has also ordered his militant faction to remain on alert, saying “in the shadow of the Arab conspirators and the American political vacuum, between Bush and Obama, there is the possibility that the enemy will take advantage of the situation and attack Lebanon.”

LIke I have any expectations of difference between Bush/Obama. Oy vey.

Petition to the UN Security Council, the European Union, the Arab League and the USA:
We urge you to act immediately to ensure a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, to protect civilians on all sides, and to address the growing humanitarian crisis. Only through robust international action and oversight can the bloodshed be stopped, the Gaza crossings safely re-opened and real progress made toward a wider peace in 2009.

Thanks for that, Debra!

A surprisingly good article about the demonstration here and demonstrators' motivations for attending in the Gazette (CanWest rag):

Angry Montrealers take to the streets

Robert Silverman of Independent Jewish Voices Montreal is indeed the famous "Bicycle Bob" Silverman.

Other protests are set as this onslaught continues.

Cripes, I just saw the headline "Germany's Merkel blames Hamas".

Of course nothing in the msm tht The Israel Air Force used a new bunker-buster missile that it received recently from the United States delivered just last month. How utterly predictable.

Quote
Defense officials said Sunday that Israel would, however, not hesitate to target the homes of civilians who protected Hamas terrorists throughout the operation.

"We will go after every Hamas operative, no matter where he is," one official said. "We urge the Palestinians not to cooperate with terrorists."

Nor a word about the Disportionate use of force to kill. As Fisk points out Hamas's home-made rockets have killed just 20 Israelis in eight years, but a day-long blitz by Israeli aircraft that kills almost 300 Palestinians is just par for the course.

I seem to remember Bush telling Israel to be discrete in its use of U.S. bombs.

And how the upcoming election fits in -
Quote
"There are those who are counting bodies and at the same time counting Knesset seats," Israeli Arab MK Ahmed Tibi (Ra'am-Ta'al) said. "Bodies for votes - this is done primarily by the Labor Party."

"There are those who are profiting from Palestinian blood in order to get elected," Hadash chairman MK Mohammed Barakeh said. Barakeh and MK Taleb a-Sana were subsequently evicted from the plenum.
