The Gaza aid ship has been rammed and fired upon by the Israelis in international waters. It is now headed for Lebanon, apparently. There were journalists aboard who are said to have filmed the attacks. I'm assuming that all these things -- the location of the ships, eg -- can be documented.

Oh yes, all of that is logged and charted.

It may be strange to go to a site that is technically Israeli-based (though its membership includes Palestinians as well as anti-Zionist Jews) but it is technically hard to get much out of Gaza right now, as, er, they are being murdered. http://www.alternativenews.org/ Alternatives Information Center (their USian spelling) is based in Jerusalem. Even the Israelis involved have been jailed, threatened etc.

Cripes, I want to slap that smug police officer in the photo, smirking as people die by the hundreds.

Barghouthi is a splendid writer and a very brave guy. Read any of his bios and you'll see what the Israelis have put him (and his cousin Marwan) through. He's a fighter for non-violent resistance, and his very popularity in the West Bank is what makes the Israelis fear him so much. He could be a great leader.

Guernica is also an apt metaphor. Gaza was Warsaw; now it's Guernica. This is a catastrophe.

Tadamon here (a site mostly centred on Palestine and Lebanon: think it was started by progressives from our huge Lebanese community) uses Guernica as its header:

www.tadamon.ca

We are organising another demonstration this coming Sunday:
SUNDAY, JANUARY 4th 12h30
carré Cabot: corner St. Catherine | Atwater
(metro Atwater)
Montreal, Quebec

Demos here don't typically start that far west (that is about the western edge of the central downtown area), perhaps it is planned to march on the Israeli consulate, now located at Westmount Square (they lost the lease on their Peel St location; too many "security problems", I guess.

Yes, the Barghoutis are very impressive indeed, and proof that even "peaceful protest" is not acceptable to the Zionist masters.

Israel banning web blogs and sanitizing with their own youtube.

Quote
The Israeli military has therefore announced that online media and the blogosphere are another warzone for the military to manage. To that end, the military is launching its own Youtube channel to bring the viewing public footage of “precision bombing operations” in the strip.

I think that will probably include anti-war

Blogosphere new war zone, JP

Foreign Press demanding Israel courts for Gaza access

Toe, where do you see news that weblogs are being banned?

I think I read all those links, and I see two facts -- that journalists' access to Gaza is being restricted, and the Israeli military is launching its own YouTube channel.

But whose internet access is being cut off? What did I miss?

noting that in addition to curating the YouTube channel, her office had delivered multiple private briefings to bloggers around the world. She said that members of her department were also getting ready to start their own "vlogs," a new media term for regularly posting videos of oneself speaking one's mind in diary form.

That's from the Jers.Post link above.

And now a 48 hour ceasefire

I wish anti-war would SAY if they were one of the blogs to get a briefing.

I took part in today's Twitter presser.  3 of my questions got answered. w00t.

The parallels between this information war and the one that took place during the Georgia/Russia conflict is striking. Much like Georgia, Israel seems primarily concerned with currying the favour of the Western public, while Hamas is content to bolster support internally in Gaza (and the West Bank) and the Arab street.

Also, Toe, I still don't see where any 'censorship' on the part of Israel is taking place. Propaganda, yes--but information management != not 'censorship'. The only 'censorship' that is alleged to have taken place is on the part of YouTube, which took down several vids from the IDF channel (apparently because the violent nature of the offending footage violated the terms of use. Irony, that.)

O/T: mattt: would you one day give me a Twitter seminar? Clearly, I do not know how to make it a useful thing.

Indeed and those vids have been put back up I think. I've shot a note off to anti-war re: censorship.

48 hr ceasefire Not On Ohmert says full speed ahead

Toe, it was YouTube that "sanitized" the IDF channel--not the IDF. This was against the wishes of the IDF, which put up the videos.

Via Danger Room, this statement from the IDF Channel:
Quote
"We are saddened that YouTube has taken down some of our exclusive footage showing the IDF's operational success in operation Cast Lead against Hamas extremists in the Gaza Strip. ... It is also worth noting that one of the videos removed had the highest number of hits (over 10,000) at the time of its removal.
"

Thus far, apart from restricting journalistic access to Gaza (which, according to the Graun, has been in place for some time now for all Israel-based reporters as part of the overall blockade and was expanded a month ago to include foreign journalists) there has been no 'censorship' on the part of the Israeli government, simply an aggressive PR offensive in response to overwhelming negative publicity.

(We'll leave the legitimacy and motives of the Paleocons and Neo-Confederates at antiwar.com for another day...)
