If you haven't checked out this blog yet, you should. It's haunting and deeply personal - driving fast on loose gravel.

It is when we all play safe that we create a world of utmost insecurity. It is when we all play safe that fatality will lead us to our doom. It is in the "dark shade of courage" alone that the spell can be broken.

Antonia, once again I can't post on your blog!

My comment was:
------------------------------
Your illustration shows Iranian tchadors, not burkhas. The law involves covering the entire face (including eyes), not fashion choices from a kerchief to a burkha.

Beyond that, I'm very much of two minds and will be consulting girlfriends of Maghrebi and other Muslim-country origins in France. I know some, much as they hate Sarkozy, would support the law, others would be against anything Sarko could enact... Will get back to you when I have more info from the parties concerned.

Do me a favour Lagatta? Please try after you have restarted your computer. That usually works for me. Or try a hard refresh.

The irony-free cultural imperialism (shorter: "Why, of COURSE white Western feminists know what's best for the poor deluded darkies") on display in that Brilliant At Breakfast post is appalling.

Or maybe I just lack testicles. *blink*

Jesus fucking wept.

ETA: What I had to say last year re: France, citizenship, and the Burqa.

ETA 2: Just wanted to make clear that Antonia's post was thoughtful and nuanced. You put that ham-fisted BaB bleat to shame, Sensei.

No kidding.

No woman on earth should have to care a damn about what Nicholas Sarkozy thinks about anything, except for the fact that he has teh power.

The French have done this repeatedly. They drove intellectuals in Turkey bananas by deciding that they should make it a crime in France to deny the Armenian genocide, since some Turkish intellectuals were in legal trouble in Turkey for talking about the Armenian genocide.

But the Turkish intellectuals don't want that kind of ham-handed, anti-democratic support. They actually believe in democracy. They want to win on their own terms, which in fact they have.

Something went really wrong in French political theory, shortly after 1789. Well, but: we knew that.
