What's Twitter?

(PS: That's not an entirely facetious question. I'm not sure Twitter is turning out to be exactly what its creators had in mind.)

Ha! We just got teh little turquoise t at our place yesterday. I nagged.  ;)

I only just figured out how useful the search function is. That's the one signified by # in front of a term, like #TorStarFAIL, already immortalized by our own mattt with three tees, or #torture, which has a lot of great political stuff but also a few bondage ads -- #guantanamo, #detainees, and #Khadr are actually more practical. It's great because you can get sources from all kinds of people you don't know, haven't "friended," the way you do on Facebook -- just people who are interested in the stuff you are.

Skdadl: Those # are called ''hash tags''
#sgp is ''Smart Girl Politics'' for right-wing ladies

I put together a bunch of useful Twitter links when I gave a seminar on it at The Star.
I will cut and paste them here. I don't have time right now to make them all clickable. Sorry.

Twitter represents the first instance in my life heretofore that makes me feel technologically outdated. When Facebook arrived, I was a bit crusty and curmudgeonly about it ('ha! These "friends" aren't even really "friends! What's with that!') but soon I became a full-fledged user, naturalized and native. Now I even text my as-hip friends unfettered and without regret. Twitter, though, even when it was clear that the kids were going to dig this thing, I pretended it didn't really exist in the way that it existed. I don't know if it was suspicion, but it was something alright, something awry.

But then young at heart and mostly young in knees, I took the plunge. And holy crap am I overwhelmed. What do you do with this thing? Who would care about it anyway? How do you keep up with the 'perts (mattt and Antonia, I am looking in your virtual directions) and the strange, anachronistic ASCII characters I have not seen since I first looked on in awe at my friend typing away on Telix and his 14400 bpm modem. #wtf.

So I got an account, sure. But it's sitting in the basement with my father's old dot-matrix printer and the Apple IIe, about as much use to these old bones as a boxset of Stephanie Meyer novels and a gift certificate to H&M.

Catchfire, I have no idea WTF you just said. I am a technotard.

My reasons for Tweeting:

1. It's a powerful news source, faster than anything.
When Tiller was shot, I was able to blog it before AP moved a half-decent story. That's because of the people in the clinic/choice network whom I follow.

2. It works as a search engine.
#Tiller that day, especially cross-searched with #prochoice, kept me up to the minute with no chaff in the wheat.

3. I tweet my blog posts, which ups the hits.

4. I have made incredible pals all over the world.
Long after you people have hit the hay, I am tweeting and relating to people with interesting things to say in real time.

The thing about Twitter is that it has a different use for each person. For some it is not useful at all.

Oh I have no doubt that twitter is useful and valuable. Actually, I'm being a bit dishonest because I do follow a lot of stories tweeted by the folk I follow (Antonia=exhibit A). I'm just saying that I have no idea how to use it myself, or rather, become overwhelmed at the prospect. What do I tweet? What do I retweet? To whom? For what? I'm not saying these questions don't have answers--in fact, I know they do--it's just that I don't know what they are.

Catchfire, do you know that there actually is a #wtf ? (No ? on the hash tag. Or maybe there's another that has one -- lol.)

Lots of German tweets when I was there, and a few French. I have this image of all kinds of Germans wandering around thinking wtf?

How do you capture or link to an individual tweet on this board or on a blog?

Will return to discuss this topic more in depth (since I seem to have developed somewhat of a reputation ;)   ). For now, lemme answer the following from skskskdadl:

Ok, let's take this tweet from Lucinda Marshall of Feminist Peace Network as an example:

Quote
Fempeace rt @IAmDrTiller Threats, Restrictions Impose Severe Obstacles 4 Abortion Providers, Women Seeking Abortions http://git.to/9rg #feminist

half a minute ago from web

The bolded portion is always a url to the individual tweet.

HTH. :)
