So you think you can rape?
« on: August 09, 2009, 01:56:11 PM »
By way of News of the Restless, Queen Bina brings us:
Quote
The unidentified female from the Mediterranean island of Crete set fire to a drunk 23-year-old Briton's genitals after he allegedly tried to sexually assault her in a crowded bar, London's Daily Telegraph reports. She earned further accolades from her countrymen for turning herself over to the police following the incident.

According to a police report, the intoxicated party-goer had taken down his pants and was waving his genitals at women in the bar.  He then "forcefully fondled" the 26-year-old woman and asked her to take hold of his genitals.

She responded by soaking his genitals in a liquor. When this failed to cool off his advances, she reportedly grabbed a lighter and set his nether-region on fire.

The alleged sex assailant is hospitalized with what the Telegraph describes as "considerable damage" to his penis and testicles.
Retribution.  Some like it hot.

Which says two things about us Greek girls.

We like a high alcohol percentage in our cocktails.

We don't like our cocktails to be fondled by guys with high alcohol percentages in them.
It is when we all play safe that we create a world of utmost insecurity. It is when we all play safe that fatality will lead us to our doom. It is in the "dark shade of courage" alone that the spell can be broken.

Despite the machism common to the Mediterranean lands, I think she will be applauded, as the not only lewd but often violent behaviour of drunken young British tourists is a very sore point (sorry) among the Greeks. Brits I know find it a great shame as well.

In Vancouver :
Quote
It was revealed during the trial that in October 2006, a woman in her 30s woke up in Alves's bed, bruised and bleeding after an evening at a downtown Vancouver nightclub.

The married woman — who cannot be identified — said she had no recollection of meeting Alves the night before.

Medical testing confirmed she had had sexual intercourse and found traces of alcohol and sedatives in her system.

The woman told the court her will to live had been drained because of what happened to her and that she was unable to feel safe or to be intimate with her husband.

In sentencing, the B.C. provincial court judge said Alves was not pathologically dangerous but had committed a crime of opportunity.

The judge ordered that Alves be placed on the sex-offender registry for the next 20 years but that he not spend time in jail.

Quote
Fernando Manuel Alves, 46, had faced four charges of sexual assault and one charge of administering a noxious substance.

Alves ultimately pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault after the other assault charges and the administering charge were dismissed following a preliminary hearing.

Dr Dawg has written about this case several times now.

So has DAMMIT JANET! - in fact, we scooped Dr Dawg on some of the details.  fern hill recently obtained some insider information that she is fwding to a B'n'R member with access to research resources for further investigation.

scooping is great for ice cream. However, especially with the level of harm here both from the attacker and the courts, I think it is inappropriate to talk as if sniffing out details is awesome.

You're the one talking about sniffing out details.

DAMMIT JANET! found a sister blogger whose friend was the unidentified victim.  She blogged about her friend's court appearances, as well as the sexism and obstacles she encountered with a police officer who discounted her report of sexual assault.  We provided links to this previous information.  We have received thank you messages from them because by working with Luna, DrDawg and JJ, 'Bina  and others, information about this purported serial rapist has gone viral and will serve to warn women who cross his path.

I don't understand why you're being so snarky about this.

Edited to add: In fact, when fern hill and I blogged at Birth Pangs, you didn't seem to have any problems with this type of investigative blogging at all.  What a difference a year makes.

By the way, have you gotten over your snit yet and do you think that you might add DAMMIT JANET! to the blog roll at Bread'n'Roses?  And you might want to change the link for unrepentant old hippie at the same time, that's her old blogsite.

Arghh. My post on Alves was a response to an e from Fern Hill two days ago to some west coast bloggers to say - Hey, what more can we do about this? - which included the link to Dawg. By the time the e was forwarded to me I added a news story and links to JANET, Antonia, and JJ, and sent it on as a new e to other west coasters who may have missed it. When I copy and pasted it here I updated the link to Dawg and left off the earlier links to others. No disrespect was intended.

The sticking point here is we do not know the judge's reasons for the lenient sentence.
When Alves was charged two years ago Fanning at the RCMP held a presser asking for other women to come forward. Were they fishing? Was there not sufficient evidence?  We would need transcripts to know.

Alison, there was a complaint lodged against a member of, I believe, the Vancouver police force who was the first officer to take the report from the only victim (of Alves' alleged serial rapes) willing to testify in court.  After an investigation, he was transfered out of the special squad investigating sexual assaults.  Other officers attempted by going public with the case to encourage other victims of similar assaults, possibly by Alves, to come forward.

I suspect that the deliberate negligence and unprofessional conduct of the original police officer caused the loss and/or contamination of evidence that would have strengthened the crown attorney's case against Alves.  But that's just my opinion.

Thanks, DBOs.
Correction : Tim Fanning, who made the public appeal, is with the VPD, not the RCMP as I said above.

Anonymous now knows the names of the 4 boys who raped, photographed young Rehtaeh Parson of Coal Harbour, N.S. The petition for an inquiry now has over 47,000 sigs so enraged are people across the country. I'm sick of the rcmp/cops not thoroughly investigating bullying and raping of young women. I hope Coal Harbour is really feeling the heat, they should. Every person who called that girl a slut is complicit, The parents of those boys are no doubt lawyering up.

To add insult to injury, the RCMP did not seem to invest much effort into investigating either the assault or the photograph’s distribution (though they are apparently now investigating the “sudden death of a minor” – useful, thanks). I won’t get into their failure on her rape case, as Anne Thériault has already done a good job of that. I want to ask why the fuck Rehtaeh’s mother was told by the RCMP that the distribution of the photo was “not really a criminal issue, more of a community issue.” http://stephguthrie.com/2013/04/09/child-porn-not-a-community-issue-rcmp/

AND -
They were not separated for their interviews; they were interviewed together, meaning that they were easily able to corroborate each others’ stories. http://bellejarblog.wordpress.com/2013/04/09/rehtaeh-parsons/

CBC this morning said someone is circulating the names of seven boys - and the provincial Minister of Justice, the police, and the victim's parent's are all calling for the removal of the names, and saying this is ridiculous and that  vigilante justice is not the way to go.

Yeah I saw that. The heat is on - father's letter said - For the love of god - do something!
Not what he meant obviously. One girl said one of the boys is walking the halls of her high school.

It was clearly not what the father meant. He was decrying violence and complicity, not advocating more of it.
