« on: December 01, 2009, 11:33:18 AM »
  Brooks wrote this blog on a lark, I love the Q & A, he has a hall of shame of all her worst glurge.

It begins with a Prayer

I loved the prayer too. Remember a blog a while back [s:h6zat2t2]about[/s:h6zat2t2] against Wente?

I am pondering something though. I find a lot of us (women, feminists, pro-feminist men) tend to loathe such rightwing women "journalists" more than their brethren.

I don't necessarily think it is antifeminist hypocrisy either - Racialised groups (African-Americans against Rice, Indigenous peoples against "apples") have similar reactions. Perhaps to a galling lack of what is perceived as solidarity to these groups' interests?

After all, there are lots of clunky, maudlin male writers as well. Rex Murphy for one. And then there is Don Cherry, whatever he is...

I know the worry -- are women sharper to/about one another because they're so attuned to certain kinds of stereotypical behaviour, which they've probably had to struggle with in themselves?

Possibly. When Blatchford starts mooning over anything in a uniform, some of us feel we could almost write her biography from grade school on. And I'm not entirely unsympathetic -- she's old enough, like me, to have had to survive in the old system -- she didn't grow up knowing she had laws behind her to guarantee her full humanity and equality.

But have I ended up falling for bully-belly guys like Hillier and Julian Fantino? No, I have not. There's some raw material that Brooks (who's Brooks?) is missing in the archives -- Blatchford's shameless campaigns on behalf of Fantino when he was police chief, which became pretty shame-filled at one point when he led the force in harrassing the head of the police services board, a campaign Blatchford joined in to the point of legal questionability, I thought at the time.

All that said, I'm happy to rip into any macho buddy you can find in the press. Interestingly, there aren't that many male Canadian journos who strike me as macho -- most of the ones I don't like are just lazy or they're geeky ideologues of the rightward persuasion, but there aren't many shouters like the guys on, eg, Fox.

Include me out.

Coren, Frum, Jonas, Warren, Worthington, Murphy, Krauthammer (I think of him as Canadian), the list goes on.

Amiel is a brilliant writer, even if we don't see eye to eye.
Blatch and Dimanno bring emotion and passion to their columns, which makes up for their misfires (which we all have.)
Wente I just disagree with, like I disagree with some moderate-right guy, like Kay (the younger), except when he's intimating that I am anti-Semitic.

The one who sets my teeth on edge is Kay mere.

Why single out Blatchford?  So she luvs them boys in police/hockey/armed forces uniform, in some of her most mawkish moments she has re-invented the "sob sister" genre of newswriting but she can also write inspired pieces at times.

I've heard from an insider that she was equally kewl and weird when assigned to cover the NDP junket during one of the last federal elections; her writing was even-handed as well.

Not sure why some are so sniffy about her - class issues perhaps?

Uh, well, gee, I dunno -- I consider character assassination to be a pretty serious problem, and I've seen her do it more than once. The very worst was her joining in the pile-on on the head of the police services board (who resigned under the onslaught of Fantino's fan club), but her column this past weekend about Colvin, filled with error, was in the same league.
