Gaza flotilla protest actions
« on: June 02, 2010, 01:13:29 PM »
I thought I'd create a new thread on activism about demonstrations and other actions (petitions, letters, etc) supporting the humanitarian aid flotilla for Gaza and protesting the brutal Israeli army attack on unarmed humanitarian aid workers. And, of course, calling for an end to the blockade itself.

We are organising another demo here in Montréal, on Saturday. People are encouraged to bring small tents to erect a symbolic "refugee camp".

I don't have the English version yet; of course I could translate it but an English version must exist so I'll try to find it.

APPEL INTERNATIONAL

• POUR DÉNONCER L’AGRESSION SANGLANTE DE L’ARMÉE ISRAÉLIENNE  CONTRE LA « FLOTILLE DE LIBERTÉ DE GAZA »

• POUR EXIGER LA LEVÉE IMMÉDIATE DU SIÈGE DE GAZA

MANIFESTATION
SAMEDI 5 JUIN 13H30

Here's a quick CBC thAng. CBC's "Question of the Day" is:

Quote
Are you satisfied with the  Canadian government's reaction to yesterday's Gaza flotilla incident?

That is really important, Berlynn. So is responding to the Zionist spokesbots that infect the most obscure of media - these include a LOT of Christian Zionists who don't have much more use for Jews than for Arabs. It doesn't take a lot of time; they keep repeating the same memes. We are "haters" - insinuating that no matter how close to Jewish culture and even if we are Jewish (by descent or faith) ourselves, we are somehow, in heart of hearts, antisemitic, "singling out" Israel.

This is bullcrap. I imagine that you have also worked tirelessly against the spoliation of the Indigenous people where you live - 20 years ago I was camped out at Oka, when not working (I couldn't spend all week there because of job). Constant demos, every evening after work that summer, outside the Hydro-Québec building where the Premier had his Montréal office.

Right now I'm livid about anti-Native bigotry IN MY OWN NEIGHBOURHOOD, about a resource for Inuit people flying down south for highly-specialised medical care, but I guess that warrants its own thread. My blood is boiling over that one.

No, I'm not singling out Israel, but its actions against the Indigenous Palestinian people are utterly unacceptable, and this brutal attack on humanitarian workers show how fucked up that state has become.

My MIL camped at Oka, at the Peace Camp, was arrested -- at the age of  66 -- spent the night in solitary confinement and was released the next  day.  All charges were eventually dropped.  So, yes, anti-racism has  been a big part of our lives.  And racism is HUGE on the prairies.

It's looking like there'll be an event supporting the humanitarian aid  flotilla for Gaza here, too.

A ship with only women on board is about to head for Gaza:

"They are nuns, doctors, lawyers, journalists, Christians and Muslims," said Mona, one of the participants who, along with the other women, has adopted the ship's name, Mariam...

Apparent sabotage against Gaza flotilla :mad2

excerpt:

A ship jointly owned by Swedish, Greek, and Norwegian activists hoping to join a flotilla of activist vessels challenging Israel's economic blockade of Gaza, had its propeller cut while in Athen's harbor today. A spokesman contacted by the Monitor said that the damage was a deliberate act of sabotage.

excerpt:

Col. (ret) Ann Wright, who's organizing a US vessel named the Audacity of Hope for the flotilla, says her ship has been detained in Athens on spurious charges that it's not seaworthy. She says that charge was made by an Israeli legal group.

excerpt:

Earlier today, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet approve using any means necessary to stop the flotilla from reaching Gaza.

Further down, the story continues...

The US has also been putting pressure on the activists to hold back. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton characterized the flotilla as hostile in a comment last week.

"We think that it's not helpful for there to be flotillas that try to provoke action by entering into Israeli waters and creating a situation in which the Israelis have the right to defend themselves," Clinton said.

The flotilla, in fact, says it has no plans to enter Israeli waters, instead planning on transiting through international waters to Gaza's territorial waters. The distinction goes to the heart of their protest. While Israel extends de facto sovereignty over Gaza's coastal waters, penning its fisherman close to shore and preventing any shipping or ferries to run to and from the Strip, it's not their territory under international law.

Clinton again!!!  :mad2

The very best thing you can do is to follow it on Twitter where, if the sh#t hits the fans, it will all play out live.

You don't need an account. Just use twitter search and play with hashtags, especially the first two

#flotilla2 #freedomflotilla2 #gaza #stayhuman

eg
http://search.twitter.com/search?q=+%23flotilla2+

You can also add key words if you want to get fancy

eg:
http://search.twitter.com/search?q=&ands=%23flotilla2+sabotage&phrase=&ors=&nots=&tag=&lang=en&from=&to=&ref=&near=&within=1000&units=mi&since=&until=&rpp=15

Some people's names to search on:
@maxblumenthal
@avinunu
@CanadaBoatGaza
@FlotillaWatch
@Mondoweiss

This just in:

http://www.military.com/news/article/senator-wants-us-israeli-op-against-flotilla.html

The Governor of Texas, whose state has been declared a disaster area, has also weighed in.

Somebody, I don't remember who, actually suggested that Obama will let the flotilla get attacked just to pander to the lobby.  I dunno ...

But Hillary and State's behaviour so far has been pathetic.
http://mondoweiss.net/2011/06/reporters-hector-state-is-the-blockade-legal-what-right-does-israel-have-to-defend-itself-from-humanitarian-aid.html

Meanwhile, the hasbarama has been in overdrive.
http://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Columnists/Article.aspx?id=227181

You really should be tracking this via Twitter search. It's been mind-boggling.
