Changing Euros € and Quid £
« on: March 07, 2011, 09:54:33 AM »
To Cdn $, obviously.

One always loses money when doing so but I want to reduce this loss as much as possible. Any ideas?

If you have them in a bank account then there are ways to transfer money that are more cost-effective than travelex, if that's what you're asking.

No, at present they are in cash, but of course can be deposited in a bank account, if one can deposit non-Canadian money.

Mmm. In cash it's much harder to avoid the travelex-type fees---or, probably better, bank fees.  If you had deposited them in the Netherlands, then there might have been cheaper electronic routes.  'Fraid I don't know any cheap way to convert foreign cash.  That doesn't mean they don't exist. Sorry :(

I'm going to face this problem when/if I move back to Canada, but I have my US money in a bank account so online expat forums have a number of ways to do it cheaply electronically.

We have a lost back acc't in Scotland. I mean, maybe it's not lost -- I hope not -- but Bank of Scotland became something else, and they don't know how to find me now, so I actually have no idea how to find them and tell them how to find me and then send our money to me. I would sort of like to do that, except this sort of thing defeats me, so I just don't do it. For years.

Google says Bank of Scotland is now part of the Lloyds banking group, but it still has its own website, as does the Royal Bank of Scotland. So get online and ask them. If you don't need the £££, some homeless CATS do! :cat

Well, that's certainly interesting, although I don't think I'll tweet them. There's a limit to how much online embarrassment I can bear. ;)

Phone. Gah. Have I ever told you how much I hate talking on the phone? Maybe I should find one of the old statements before I call ... there must be one here somewhere ... it would have an acc't # on it.

I did have an online connection with them seven or eight years ago, but then history moved on, as it tends to do, and I didn't maintain, as I tend not to do, so ...

Yes, finding a bank statement is the first thing. If you hate talking on the phone, get a trusted person to do it.

I won't tell you about the 300 cats in a shelter here who have to be rehoused immediately, at least not yet...
