Thanks for flagging this, Holly. Amazing how much Harper and his gang hate information.

Well, I remember doing research there in the early 1990s when they were open 24 hours; then they started closing at 11pm I think; once when I was frantically trying to get through a bunch of files the guard came in at 10:45 and started jingling his keys so I could not concentrate and I could have kicked him.

But I recall hearing a while ago that Harper had appointed an economist in charge of the L&A and that his plans sounded ominous. And as they say, the cuts started before Harper became PM, but of course his stoopid government will make things worse.

Archivists demonstrating in Ottawa about cuts to archives:

My dad worked at the National Archives and he would have been appalled at these cuts  - and at other Harper initiatives. As am I.

It looks to me like Harper is determined to make so many changes (and entrench them) that no subsequent government could possibly overrule them because of the sheer numbers and bureaucracy involved.   :mad2

Yes, I've spent many a happy hour there, researching not only for my thesis but also for the Canadian entries in an international biographical dictionary on labour activists...

It is horrible, indeed they are scrapping so much that it would be very hard to set it right.

:crying Maybe when Harper moves Defence, CSIS, RCMP and a handful of industry/religious friendly ministries West, he'll burn and sack Ottawa. He's essentially doing that in bits and pieces.

He's already sacking it.

I did most of my research for my MA thesis at the PAC. These cuts are the unkidest.

Not most of my research (interviews and publications from several archives and private sources were more crucial) but I most certainly did part of it there, as well as research for other historical projects, including biographies of trade unionists from as long as 150 years ago (probably longer ago by now ... time passes).

These days I'm most personally affected by the elimination of funding to development/human rights groups and the deep cuts to arts organizations, but the cuts to libraries/archives and to scientific research have huge long-term social and cultural consequences.

An excellent article on what is being cut. Many disturbing aspects, including this one:

This has me so upset that I actually had a dream last night that revolved around meeting up with a colleague from the late 90s who went on to work with Archives Canada. It was a really sad dream to hear where she landed with these cuts and what had been done with so many programs.  :crying
