Argentine dictator Videla convicted of baby thefts
« on: July 05, 2012, 10:23:58 PM »

"Argentina took a giant leap forward in its struggle to come to terms with its bloody past during the 1976-83 dictatorship by condemning former dictator Jorge Videla to 50 years in prison for masterminding a plan for stealing the newly-born children of political opponents and handing the babies over to be raised by "good" military families after killing their mothers.
The verdict on Thursday evening capped a 16-year trial during which hundreds of hours of testimony were heard proving that the kidnappings were not just collateral damage in the "civil war" between the military and left-wing guerrillas, as supporters of the dictatorship have claimed, but rather a deliberate policy put in place by the top leaders of the regime".

Problem is, so long afterwards, the old bastard obviously isn't going to serve much of his 50-year sentence, and at a certain point jailing extremely old convicts becomes rather grotesque in turn. Indeed, justice delayed, justice denied.

In Castillian/Spanish for those who read it:

This to me was always one of the most horrendous chapters in modern human history. Arresting young people, torturing them, throwing them out of helicopters in the open ocean ... after waiting for the pregnant ones to deliver their babies yet.
It is when we all play safe that we create a world of utmost insecurity. It is when we all play safe that fatality will lead us to our doom. It is in the "dark shade of courage" alone that the spell can be broken.
