Technology & Science / U.S. Power Grid Test

August 2013 - Outgoing US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Tuesday warned of a “major cyber event” in the future that would have a “serious” impact on American society.

August 2013 - NYT's on Nationwide Drill set for Nov. 13-14

This is why thousands of utility workers, business executives, National Guard officers, F.B.I. antiterrorism experts and officials from government agencies in the United States, Canada and Mexico are preparing for an emergency drill in November that will simulate physical attacks and cyberattacks that could take down large sections of the power grid.

North America does need a power grid drill, but why announce it to the 'bad guys', doesn't that make N.A. a bit vulnerable in these times? There are still people who think the Boston Marathon attack was a 'drill decoy' to practise martial law in a city. :tinfoil

She swam 53 hours straight, from Cuba to Key West, in shark-infested/jellyfish waters, 53 hours! She's some kind of superwoman to have that kind of mind control, will and steadfast determination. She's the first person EVER to do such a thing, she's also prolly the first woman who said out loud on CNN 'fucking' as in "We Fucking Did It!" CNN apologized to its viewers for the profanity (you could hear the anchorwoman chuckling in the background). Of course they will never replay that moment again, but prolly up on youtube before we know it. It was dynamite to hear this woman warrior express her joy w/ the profanity it deserved.  :))

The peonies in full bloom are very heady, the coolish and gorgeous June is how I remember it is suppose to be and I'm loving it....altho the heat wave begins tomorrow (right on time for 1st day of summer) and by Monday expecting a humidex of 39, ugh. The A/C is sitting on a chair not yet in the window, I think I may have to ask for some help from super, ugh.

Calgary, what's happening? I'm so glad the young man in his pick up truck and his cat Momo swam safely to dry ground.

Activism / MASKS outlawed

Okay I'm not the brightest :o :o  in the lot of canada. But this is pretty much the STOOPIDEST LAW I'VE EVER SEEN IN CANADA. And yeah I'm laughing at the idiocy.

Wearing a mask at a riot is now a crimeMaximum 10-year prison term for conviction of new offence

Exceptions can be made if someone can prove they have a "lawful excuse" for covering their face such as religious or medical reasons." Let's all turn Muslim!

My friend works for a native agency, she's been on stress leave for 5 weeks as she was the target. Depression/rashes/fear/nausea etc. She was told today by Manulife her claim was not accepted because Manulife doesn't get involved in 'workplace issues'.

Depression and Stress are no longer covered even if your union has short term or long term disability. Your on your own financially. Shareholders trump.

Africa / War in Congo
« on: June 18, 2013, 01:53:58 PM »
UN has 3,000 enforcers.Almost unnoticed, the UN is about to fight its first war. That is a gamble worth taking (according to the Economist)

The risks in Congo are considerable. The terrain is tricky and local allies are unreliable. The 3,000 UN enforcers are not especially cohesive or powerful and some may have ulterior motives, including the defence of business interests. That could damage the UN’s reputation and undermine its mission. Furthermore, Congo suffers from far more than violence. Political institutions are dilapidated, corruption is rife, poverty is widespread and ethnic tensions run deep. No armed force can fix all that. Peace alone will still leave most Congolese in misery.Nonetheless, the new UN initiative deserves wide support. All previous efforts to end the bloodshed have failed. The recent history of war-torn African countries like Sierra Leone shows that peace brought about by foreign troops can boost political reforms and generate prosperity. Liberal interventionism is an unfashionable creed; in poor, benighted Congo, it is still worth trying.
The business interests are copper mines.

Children as young as 8 are forced to work in those mines. But who will watch the UN forces, they have been known to rape, make deals with whoever etc.

News / EU/Porn/Blocking e-mails/Not Democratic
« on: March 13, 2013, 12:12:25 AM »
The European Union approved a report on gender equality but struck down a controversial 'porn ban' section.

Pirate Party founder Rick Falkvinge wrote on his website that the word "media" was broad and vague enough to "even include photos you take of yourself and send to friends, as well as simple text messaging."
"This is a hair-raising attack on freedom of speech and freedom of expression that should never have made it past the first cursory review," he wrote.
"Freedoms of speech and expression most definitely include sending erotic material — text, images, sound — between consenting adults," he wrote, adding that the proposal was "an unacceptable and intolerable political invasion of people's bedrooms."
Engström called the porn-blocking proposal another effort to get Internet service providers to start policing what citizens do on the Internet, not by legislation, but by ”self-regulation."

Equally, if the report is defeated next week, it will weaken later attempts by the Commission to bring in self-regulation. Recognising this, people like Rick Falkvinge have been asking Europeans to write to their representatives to urge them to reject the report, as Techdirt user rudeholmpointed out[ But as Engström now reports, emails on these censorship plans are being blocked by the European Parliament's tech department[:<blockquote>around noon, these mails suddenly stopped arriving. When we started investigating why this happened so suddenly, we soon found out:

The IT department of the European Parliament is blocking the delivery of the emails on this issue, after some members of the parliament complained about getting emails from citizens.
This is exactly what happened with ACTA, when the Parliamentary authorities decided that all emails on the subject would go straight into the spam folder. It's extraordinary to see how quickly politicians forget that hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets to defend their online rights back then, and how unceremoniously dumping their emails in the spam folder only made things worse.

One wonders if the EU's vagueness was on purpose. The comments re: this porn ban are as red-neck and ignorant as I've ever seen.
