Watergate wasn't about a hotel either but I don't think that confused anyone.
A lot of people won't care about the details now, nor did they then.
It's the meme that counts.

While Chicago synagogues may not have been the principal target of last week's foiled package bomb plot, U.S. officials now think that terrorists used addresses of Jewish organizations in an attempt to magnify the emotional aftereffects of the attack.

The name on one package was Reynald Krak, a 12th century crusader. The other was directed to Diego Deza, who headed the Spanish Inquisition of the late Middle Ages.

Since 2006 the Government of Canada has systematically undermined democratic institutions and practices, and has eroded the protection of free speech, and other fundamental human rights. It has deliberately set out to silence the voices of organizations or individuals who raise concerns about government policies or disagree with government positions.
Read and sign the full declaration
Organizations that wish to endorse this Declaration should send an email to
Maybe BnR could join as an endorsing org.

Con Jay Hill pulled a fast one on Friday by introducing a motion to curtail any further debate on the Canada-Colombia Free Trade Investment Bill. It passed.
Today it passed 2nd reading inthe House with help from 37 Libs who voted with the Cons :
former human rights activist Ignatieff, Dion, Rae, Bagnell, Brison, Bagnell, Belanger, Crombie, Cuzner, Dryden, Kirsty Duncan, Easter, Eyking, Fry, Garneau, Goodale, Holland, Hall Findlay, LeBlanc, MacAuley, McCallum, McGuinty, John McKay, Mendes, Shawn Murphy, Murray, Oliphant, Proulx, Ratansi, Regan, Rota, and Russell.
No Libs voted against it although some abstained.
Now it goes off to committee where 7 of the 12 members already voted in favour of it today. It's a done deal.
Thanks for writing to 'em, Croghie.

Politics / Proroguing democracy

Tom Flanagan on CBC Power Panel tonight :
"The government's talking points don't have much credibility. Everybody knows that Parliament was prorogued in order to shut down the Afghan inquiry, and the trouble is that the government doesn't want to explain why that was necessary. I personally think that was a highly defensible action but instead of having an adult defence of it the government comes up with these childish talking points so then you try to backfill with other stuff that doesn't make much sense either so it's a self-created problem.
I hope no one thinks I'm a Harper stooge anymore."

In February, Bernie Farber CEO of the CJC, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, and 10 other Lib and Con MPs attended the London Conference on Combating Anti-Semitism.
4 months later Canada set up its own branch office :
"Antisemitism is an age-old phenomenon, yet it is always re-invented and manifested in different ways. For example, while accusations of blood libel are still being made against the Jewish people, instead they are being directed against the State of Israel, such that anti-Zionism is being used as a cover for antisemitism

Environment / Chemicals feminizing males
« on: December 10, 2008, 09:34:10 AM »
Chemicals commonly found in food wrapping, makeup and baby powders are having a gender-bending effect – feminizing male populations of wildlife and humans, a scientific report reveals.

"This research shows the basic male tool kit is under threat," says author Gwynne Lyons, a former health adviser to the British government.

Humans and wildlife have been exposed to more than 100,000 new pollutants in recent years.

Lyons' report draws on more than 250 studies from around the world, examining the effects of hormone-disrupting chemicals.
